To expand a bit.
Gatherers need a lot of micro, so I don’t really like them. Crops are very complex with yearly rotation, diseases, soil quality, seasons, etc. knowledge is very important, as well as tools, because if you miss any of those you enter a death spiral where you’re increasing your population and slowly loosing the ability to support them. Trade is I guess the most important, as it can net you a lot of gold to build stuff and keep your army upkeep and other upkeeps (like ratting and composting services).
Focus on selling value added manufactured stuff like soap, candles, clothes, armour, etc.
By the way, you can only build in grids, which is a bit of a letdown, but you can build diagonal and curibing streets, as well as walls.
Me? I’m role playing and making sure the town is evolving organically instead of doing min maxing with zoning and grids (you can shove things in districts to keep your desirability score high, which makes people immigrate to your town and keeps people happy).
Always build houses in surplus to make sure you’re ready for more births or immigrants, because people without a roof will tank happiness.
That’s it I guess. Don’t do maintenance on your fields (removing rocks/planting clovers) at the same time, or you WILL starve.
