Why the fuck are winchester small pistol and rifle primer sleeves almost identical Edition
It is once again Friday homies, post ya loads
got 75 rounds of 5.56 loaded up with RMR 75gr, 25 each of CFE223, varget and N540
ended up using 30 small pistol primers before i realized so all 25 of the CFE loads have them and the first 5 of the N540 loads, fingers crossed it doesnt cause any issues

I mean they pretty much are the same thing, IIRC you can use SRPs as SPP replacements in some loads. For SMPs you can use them for just about any load, although you may have light strike issues depending on the gun.

A Lee shotgun press is like $80. Powder is about $50 a pound, primers about $80 for 1k, shot is cheap af and you can get it off Amazon for $30 for 4 pounds of #7.5. So for about $250 you can load at least 1k shells. Birdshot is about $10 a box here in CA before the 21% Bonta-fucks-you tax and $5 ammo fee, so roughly $500 for 1k loaded shotshells. Doing the math you'll save a fuckton of money, but you'll pay for it in time because you'll be cranking that press all day. Well, at least if you're not at Turners where the boomers monopolize the sole gun clerk with shitty boomer stories while there's 20+ people in line behind them to buy ammo.

tl;dr: You'll save a lot of money but unless you're buying shotshells from fucking Turners it'll take a lot more time.

Hmmmmm
It doesn't seem too bad, two flats of Rio 7/8oz 1350 fps is already almost $250 for 500 rounds, and a youtube video showed a guy cranking out 25 shells in less than 30 minutes. So about 2.5 hours a week gets me 5 rounds of trap or about 3 to 4 hours of practice per weekend. I think it would be worth my time to reload, either spread out over the week or in one go in the morning before I go shooting. Thank you anon, I'll prolly grab a press here soon.

Getting your press set up and dialed in with your specific powder charge data is going to take a while, think hours to get it all worked up. That guy is probably both very experienced and has his charge data all dialed in already. My experience with pistol handloading is that you'll never find the exact powder you're looking for locally (again fuck Turners boomers hoarding every kind of powder/primers, never using it ever since they're always chatting at the gun counter instead of shooting/loading, then having their retarded libtard zoomer kids throwing away literally hundreds of pounds of scarce powder when they die) and will need to resort to a digital scale to get the charges right using alternate powders/Hodgdon website powder data. I use a Frankford Arsenal scale and a Lee powder dipper set, but am going to get some static-free microdose supplement scoopers soon so I can really dial in my charges.

That said, if it's a static-free plastic scoop, you can use it for smokeless powder right? The Lee dippers don't look much different than all the cheap Amazon ones, which get much finer measurements.

Interesting, like run the handle of the spoon under water and the rest will be static free. Problem is getting it dry to prevent any water from getting in the powder later but without building up static from rubbing; maybe pat it dry on a paper towel?

had I not broke one of the arms on my lee single stage trying to swage .338 bullets down to .329 I probably would have kept it screwed to a board for priming, maybe I can order a replacement piece.

It's going to be optimistic for sure.
It's really difficult to get light bullets to move quickly with a slow powder unless your barrel is unusually long. Used both Enforcer and AA4100, which are alleged to be the same thing. It's a better in larger cartridges.
They are close in practice to H110/296.

Loading heavy doesn't fix it from a short barrel, even if the ES is small. 100fps slower than alleged from several different guns isn't unusual.
The slower powders turn in much more expected results with heavier bullets.

Can someone explain shoulder bump to me. I understand what it is, but I’ve been resizing some once fired .308 brass and where I have the die set, the case body and neck resizes but the shoulders don’t move at all. Headspace when measured is also smaller than minimum SAAMI spec, so is it just a case of the factory brass being quite undersized and it will take a few fireings before bumping the shoulder is actually necessary/possible?

I loaded and shot 200 all on brand new brass.. i don’t think I’ll be reloading it that hot again.. I do have a bunch of those bullets, and honestly if I back it down to around 1450-1400 fps I think it’ll be a lot more consistent and less kicky.. I think underwood’s are at 1600 fps, but I don’t know what they test it out of… if it’s out of a 1911 with a 5 inch barrel, then I’d bet I’m closer to that than it looks for the 40 fps velocity difference. if your sizing die is a full length die it is bumping the shoulder down for you. if you have a neck size die only it isnt touching the shoulder. the shoulder expands forward in bottleneck cartridges because the chambers and headspace are usually bigger than the spec to allow for some tolerance for fouling or because of wear. your shoulders are getting bumped you just arent noticiign or paying attention. or your rifle chamber is so tight and undersized. or your loads are so comically light that the brass doesnt even expand

I was told that was from psi testing vs cup.. if you cup test blue dot undrr 125 gn bullets at common loadings it looks ok. If you psi test it then you find out it’s apparently really really close to a pretty significant spike in pressure…. From a liability perspective most loading manuals assume your gonna push the envelope and put in some margin of safety… blue dot in that load turned out to have significantly less.

looks interesting, I have the lee bench primer mounted to a board and love it, but for someone who doesn't already have all the special lee shell holders seems like a nobrainer. Plus I always worry about the plastic in the lee, seems like you might get a faceful of plastic bits if a primer got squished wrong. I have had a few land 90 degrees sideways but never squished any enough to detonate.

same here anon, my grandpa gave my dad his ruger .44 semi auto carbine, the winchester jfps were 23$ and were purchased in probably 2003. I just don't believe money has any value anymore, at least i've got like 33 guns and 4 cars. No one president has had the balls to accept that the us has been in a recession since 2008 and propped up by fiat currency and weighted debt for fear of being labeled a recession president

that's what I remember being the problem, the pressure spike. probably less of a problem with Rugers

Once you get the hang of adjusting the 3 holding tabs it’s pretty straight forward.. I use it on everything from 38 special up to 500 mag. You do have to swap pistons for large or small primers, but it’s a single metal set screw to do so.. the only part that’s a little fiddly is sticking the full tube of primers into it without spilling them… that’s why it’s on a wood base…. Easier to just flip it over and put it on the tube than the other way around..

Hey guys, I got a possibly retarded question for ya.
Local boomer is getting out of competition, and is willing to sell me some berry's .38 super bullets. I don't have anything in .38 Super, just .38 special and 9mm luger. Seeing as the bullets are in the 9mm diameter range, would these be OK to use as a general purpose bullet for reloading my 9mm and .38 special?
>Bullets are pic related

Never messed with them. 9mm is usually .355, 357 mag is…. .357…. My guess would be that at .356 you can probably get away with using them for either but they won’t do as well…. Might try getting a Lee bullet sizing die in .355. That’s close enough you could squeeze them down.. again, I’ve never messed with them, but that’s my gut guess.

I recently got into trap shooting and reloaded my own ammo. It worked great (12ga cheddite hulls and primers, titegroup, wad, 7/8oz 7.5 shot roll crimp)

I loaded up another batch and the only thing that changed was using winchester .209 primers but half my rounds did not fire except the primers and all the shit shot out the barrel in slomo. wtf is happening? same recipe worked perfect first time but not the second? only thing that changed was the primer from cheddit to winchester

Also: wot getting a lee load all or $$MEC 600 press? I just have an RCBS 12ga kit for my single stage press and a roll crimp tool as well that works decently.

I shoot an old Parker Bros. SxS

For clarity, did the other of half your rounds fire successfully or did they not fire at all?
Did you cut some of them open after an hour and looked at the powder or primer? It almost sounds like your powder has moisture in it.

I fired all my rounds (5 boxes) and used the hulls to reload those boxes plus 2 more. Those reloads were what were misfiring. Just the primer was firing the loads. The powder did not ignite. I store rounds in either plastic shotgun boxes or reused cardboard shotshell boxes placed in water tight ammo cans filled with silicon packs for moisture control. The reloads all used the exact same bottle of titegroup powder. It's odd.

Yeah they're fine for either 9mm or .38

Yes.
While "357" and "38" bullets are actually .357", the bores in the guns are 9mm dimension. .346" lands, .355-.356" grooves.
If your gun was to slug at an actual .357" then it would be pretty sloppy.

Shotshell loading is both simple and complicated.
The simple part you already know: insert powder, wad, & shot into the hull and crimp. The complicated part is how all the components interact. Hulls and wads are not universally compatible, if you use the wrong wad with the wrong hull then they won't seal properly and you'll get inconsistent ignition. Primers matter a lot too.

What exact hulls and wads did you use? Be specific.

I highly recommend shotshell reloaders to get the "Advantages" manual from BPI, as it will save you a lot of hassle screwing around with loads that are unreliable or don't pattern well.

>wtf is happening?
Incomplete powder combustion. There's lots of possible causes: wrong powder, mismatch between the wad and the hull, not enough tension in the crimp, wrong size wad for the amount of shot you're using, etc. Without knowing exactly what components you used we can only guess.

Okay thanks for the feedback. I must have something to do with crimp tension or the winchester vs cheddite primers

(12ga cheddite hulls and primers, 15gr titegroup, CB0178 wad, 7/8oz lead 7 1/2 shot, roll and later star crimp)

The first batch performed amazing and I was getting 20/25 on all the round my first time shooting trap. Second batch I experimented with star crimping some boxes and also using the winchester primers. That's when the 50% misfires happened. Powder must not have been compressed properly and the primer may need to be hotter or checked.

I reload difficult rounds like .577/.450 Martini, .577 Snider and 8mm Kropatschek so I though this should be easy compared.

I just bought a lee load all at aution yesterday so maybe my production quality will improve

Shotshell loading is difficult because of the powder charges, space in the shell for wad compression during ignition and shot charge. Nevermind the pressure standard that you need to attain to not nuke Cletus's worn out hardware store single shot.

Anyway any idea how I can kludge together some .43 mauser for a 71/84? I've got .45/90 cases, Imr 4198, a weird hollow base .43 cal bullet and the vauge idea to use the neck of a cartridge to headspace the modified case

Part of the problem, which nobody ever tells you except for the Advantages manual, is that wads and hulls have different internal shapes and they need to match. Some hulls have straight parallel walls. Others are slightly tapered where the hull is thicker near the case head and thinner near the mouth, sort of a "funnel" shape though not that extreme. These hulls need different wads to perform properly. If you try and use a tapered style of wad in a straight-walled hull that can give the problems you mentioned. The CB0178 wad is good for 7/8oz clay loads but it wants a tapered hull. Cheddite hulls are straight-walled. I think this could be the main source of your problem. Try switching to a wad that works with straight-wall cases if you want to use Cheddite hulls, or use tapered hulls like Remington or Winchester with those CB0178 wads.
