They had the genius idea of turning their safety measure for a potential lockdown hiatus into a crucial part of the lore and setting so early on into production they managed to continuously build upon this key character from the very beginning of the show all the way to the end.

It's nice when the narrator gets to be more than a disembodied voice, and so are the instances in which the silliest character turns out to be the most tragic one.

Baku equips the Capsem (a tool containing the power of dreams) on his chest's Transformation belt (Zeztz Driver), transforming into Kamen Rider Zeztz.
Capsem currently comes in four basic colors: red (Physicam) for "physical power," blue (Technolom) for "power or civilization," green (Esprim) for "power of divinity," and purple (Paradigm) for "dimensional power," that can be used on a real-world like level.

The motorcycle he rides is a "Code Zeroider," capable of transforming into a humanoid robot. It likely reminds many of Auto Vajin from "Kamen Rider 555."

Baku Yorozu & Minami Yorozu

Baku (played by Ryuutarou Imai) and Minami (played by Miki Yagi) are a harmonious sibling pair. The brother, Baku, is a young man with a strong sense of justice, but whenever he helps others, he encounters nightmare-ish misfortunes (accidents, crimes, illnesses, etc.). He's incredibly unlucky.

Tetsuya Fujimi (played by Kenta Mishima) is the Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department's Public Security Bureau's Mysterious Incident Division. Investigating mysterious incidents known as "Black Cases" (suspicious deaths, disappearances, and unsolved accidents).

Nasuka Nagumo (played by Rina Onuki) is an elite professional assigned to the Misterious Incident Division and harbors suspicions about the Black Cases. Rina Onuki is best known for her role as Sae (Kamen Rider Lopo) in "Kamen Rider Geats."
"You can't do anything. No one can save you. Witness the ultimate nightmare."

Nightmare Monsters

The monsters that appear in this series are called "Nightmares."

They penetrate the depths of the human psyche and appear in the dream world.

They transform the dreamer's unconscious wishes into evil dreams (nightmares) and sabotage them to fulfill them in their worst form. Bomb Nightmare uses the nightmare power associated with bombs to leap into darkness. The larger photo shows Gun Nightmare, who appears in episode 1. All monsters wear belts around their waists, sharing the same buckle but varying in the straps.

Toshinari Yanaka / Born in 1989. A producer affiliated with Toei. He has worked on the TV series "Woman of S.R.I." and the Toei film and stage production "Jakkotai". He made his debut in special effects as an AP on "Kamen Rider Ex-Aid." He has also worked on "Kamen Rider Build" and the TTFC streaming program "Kamen Rider Outsiders." "Kamen Rider Zeztz" marks his first directing special effects production. "Ninja Sentai Kakuranger" is the special effects series he watched live as a child.

This interview has made me more hopeful about Zeztz, although I still want interviews/blogs explaining exactly what did each vice producer do, but I guess we'll get those once the show has already started like it happened with Gotchard and King-Ohger rather to how it was with Gavv where we knew immediately what Takejima did.
Yanaka seems more down to earth which I like, it seems like he wanted to do experimental motifs but decided not to give a proper introduction to the western audience, but that doesn't mean we'll get safe motifs in the future it seems it just was to give a proper "first show" to newcomers that doesn't confuse them on what's Kamen Rider about, so next year we can get experimental motifs again as long as the producer doesn't pussy out. While I like how Gotchard's design meshes a grasshopper with a train seamlessly, this really makes me wish Minato hadn't done an Ichigo homage since he really didn't have any reason to do so unlike Zero-One and Zeztz. I hope the show turns out well even if Takahashi's tropes will feel repetitive because his previous 3 seasons weren't that long ago and the show will start without a focus on plot like Drive.

Interview with Producer Yanaka (cont):

>The design of the transformation belt is almost all black, very minimalist yet.

Yanaka: Not making it fancy was one of the themes of this one. Previous transformation belts have been the size of a bento box, and I don't think it's realistic to wear something of that size on your chest, so it's good that the size is also a bit more compact than in the past. The key point is that the part that goes into the capsule is Turquoise Green and wraps around in a circle.

>What about capsules for the linked props?

Yanaka: Initially we were pushing toward eliminating the linkage props. I thought it would be easier to organize the plot by having the ability to switch forms without the props, like in Kuuga or Den-O. Since it's a Rider fighting in a dream world, it should be able to change its form or activate its abilities even without the linking props. However, considering the commercial aspect, it was felt that it would be better to have linkage props, so it was finally decided to introduce them. That being said, we still wanted to add some logic to the setup. So we proposed that instead of attaching flashy parts when the form switches, the energy is conducted to a certain part through the belt's vein-like lines, for example, if the energy is focused on the hand, the shape of the hand will change, how about this for directionality? The force moves from the chest to the girdle, thus changing form or shape. That's the reason we set it up.

Yanaka: This was a setup that came about after discussions with Ishimori PRO and the toy team during discussions on how to enhance the value of the capsule itself. The center part of the capsule has a rotating mechanism, and by rotating it you unleash the power, as depicted in the episode. For example, if you use the Impact Capsule, your muscle strength will increase and your physical abilities will be enhanced.

Yanaka: Relying on just one form for an entire year is a lot of work for a series, and it's hard to be so extreme (and concise) from the point of view of the merchandise lineup. However, we also don't want to make the shape change too much when switching between forms. In recent years, it's been popular to layer armor on top of armor, but this time, for the base form of each color, our concept was to “keep the shape the same, but only change the color”. Although the pattern around the chest changes, we consciously tried not to change the direction of the body lines.

>In other words, a form that could have been a completely different look (design) has been made into a derivative form of the same color. There are currently 10 publicly available forms, right?

Yanaka: Yes. Physicam Impact is the basic red color. On top of that, there are two derivative forms, “Stretch” and “Wing”, which are roughly the same concept. There are also 3 other base forms, each with their own derivatives, for a total of 10 such structures. Instead of all the forms being side by side, there are 4 base forms, and each of them has a mode that can use a special ability. I think there may have also been the idea of not having simple blue (Technorum Stream), green (Esprim Recovery), and purple (Paradigm Wonder) forms, and keeping only those with weapons or armor attached to their arms and legs. This time, we've created three forms for the Physical Impact form with the same silhouette and different colors only, reflecting the production staff's desire to emphasize the basic design of ZZZ and to make people around the world remember the Masked Rider's stance.

As for the performance of the rider's body glowing, it was because Supervisor Kamihoriuchu and I saw the vein-like lines on the ZZZ holster and thought, “I'd like to make it glow” (laughs), and we thought that the 555's body would glow.

Yanaka: The early planning meetings were advanced together with Shirakura and Tsukada. When we saw Mr. Yuya (the screenwriter) wrote a memo saying "using the theme of dreams seems good", both of them agreed that this was a crucial point. It's rare for two people with very different styles to agree, so I thought this direction must be right (laughs). Thus, the concept of "dreams as the theme" began.

>Why add the "secret agent" element?
Yanaka: When asking the planning team members "what kind of dreams would you have", we realized that simply using dreams as the theme would be hard to grasp and confusing. So from the start, we knew we needed to combine it with other elements. Although detective or police themes first came to mind, since similar concepts had appeared in previous series, we ultimately chose "secret agents" as a completely new element.

>Features of the dream story and battles?
Yanaka: In Ex-Aid, the method of switching battle scenes through selection of game levels was very successful. The "dream world" itself naturally carries this logic, enabling the story to unfold in a way that immerses and convinces the audience. I think it's analogous to the level selection in Ex-Aid. To highlight the "dream stage" setting, especially in the first episode, we deliberately used camera switches to show completely different scenes.

We think it may be because he is extremely unfortunate in reality -since his hopes in the real world cannot be fulfilled, he becomes a superhero in his dreams. But the reality of the real world is also portrayed seriously. Because It’s a story of the protagonist transforming into Kamen Rider, it naturally produces a certain sense of incongruity compared to usual shows. Therefore, the link between dreams and reality is carefully depicted to avoid rushed worldview explanations. When considering how to attract overseas viewers unfamiliar with Kamen Rider and keep them watching, we ultimately settled on this approach.

>Core focus of global promotion?
Yanaka: Domestic Japanese viewers have a fixed impression of "Kamen Rider", but the proportion of overseas viewers paying attention just because It's a "new work" is not high. The existing overseas audience mainly consists of adults familiar with Japanese tokusatsu. To expand the audience, this time we first pursued a solid storyline, with a somewhat serious dramatic tone. Accordingly, the actors were all chosen for mature acting skills, and audition standards were strictly controlled to maintain quality.

He's right, aside from kinda Gotchard and Gavv because they fuse with their bikes, none of the Reiwa Rider Machines stand out because of how little they're used, even Revice's Hover bike failed to stand out despite its strong debut due to its lack of usage. I really hope that Yanaka actually manages to achieve constant bike usage, like with workarounds of led sets or because the bike looks simplistic it might bypass bike laws. I'm surprised that they managed to make the concept of "the protagonist being part of an organization" seem lonely, it does feel like an element that might dissappear in the second half if Baku gets a higher position on the organization, the cops realize his true nature and Minami becomes the agent of Nem. This focus on solitude makes me wonder how Nox will even work as a secondary, in practice he feels "what if the Kujaku Undead or Horobi became the Secondary rider" which is weird since while we've had asshole and villainous secondary riders before I don't think we've had the initial main antagonist become a secondary, I assume Dark Zeztz will the over the Nightmares in Q2 which will lead to Nox becoming a Rider but I still wonder how will his dynamic with Baku even work. Also how the hell will Dark Zeztz even look since Zeztz already has a lot of black and Yezz's Rival form already looks like an evil Zeztz.

It's weird that Takahashi was the one who picked the dream motif since usually writers don't come up with such big aspects of the setting, in all 3 of his previous seasons the initial worldview was thought off by the producer alone. Also am I reading this wrong or is this implying that the reason the pick Takahashi was the same reason Komura was picked for LuPat?, basically the writer had come up with a setting idea for a different motif that didn't get picked, so the chief producer who had the writer's contact hired them again to use their scrapped idea.
I think Riku Sanjo and Naruhisa Arakawa were the only times a writer wasn't picked again despite Toei doing a show with a scrapped motif that they were initially planning to work on.

I'm about 23 episodes in and I don't like Hayato, his Rider outfit, or the club characters nearly as much as I liked the trio of Hongo, Tachibana, and Ruriko. That it's "good", because of how unplanned Hayato's inclusion was for his first 12 episodes you can feel that the staff has no idea on what they're doing. The show gets better later but then you get the same feeling of "the staff doesn't know what to do" once Takeshi becomes the protagonist again, and then it goes back to being good again later.
So overall the show isn't bad but it just has wa to many production issues and inconsistencies in its tone to truly be great.

I think there was definitely a lot of wheel-spinning in the original show because the entire thing was a fly-by-night production - Toei was only ever really doing cop dramas and pulp dramas by that point. Especially at your point in the show, that was only a couple months after they had to change a lot of plans after Fujioka broke his leg. Something you're gonna notice as well is they will repeat a lot of episode plots where a scientist or kid gets kidnapped, I can tell you now a good chunk of these you can just skip to the big fight of the episode and you won't miss much.

There was a really weird push with Breakcookie Bitter Gavv where he was promoted as if he was a major antagonist or something and not a villain of the week.
