Is this anime any good? I saw someone compare it to Evangelion and that caught my attention. Is this comparison absurd? I want to watch it but I don't want to waste my time with a shitty anime.

This is a complaint that I've seen thrown around a lot for a lot of different shows. With E7 it's more true than usual. They're not all awful, nor are they implausibly cruel (in the sense that their cruelty is the kind of thing you'll see actual people do sometimes), but they're basically all unpleasant dicks.
The animation is good enough to carry it for a while. I would probably not watch it again.

It's mid. Music is good and the mecha are certainly unique, but it's very clearly in that normalfag niche of "It's le mecha show but the focus is on le characters" shit they spout. Very unlikeable cast and it meanders alot.

That's one thing I liked about E7, the cast is a bunch of misled people who work together for a greater good.

Also they aren't all assholes, it's really just Holland and Talho and they grow out of it by the end.

The thing about the characters in Eureka Seven is that some are pretty realistic teenagers so they can be dumb and whiny fuckils. And their leader is a man child. But I found Renton endearing. And all of them really. And they all grow as the show goes on and I ended up loving it a lot. They finally get their shit together. And they weren't that unlikable they were just going through shit. The revelation of Eureka's past in the military was one of my favourite moments in the show.

It gets into cool scifi shit which I liked too. And the music and world were so colorful.

Weird question. When somebody says a character isn't likeable what does that mean? That they have too many flaws? I always thought characters were supposed to have flaws to make them realistic. Is it that these flaws aren't well balanced enough with positive traits?

I am thinking about a lot of prestige Western TV like Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, and Mad Men and wondering what makes an unlikeable lead vs a fully realized anti-hero.

I liked it for the most part. It's definitely a Bones show; there's interesting worldbuilding that never gets fully fleshed out, beautiful designs and animation, and the story absolutely falls to shit towards the end leaving you wondering what the fuck even happened. They're all like that. All things said, I've never seen a Bones show I didn't like. You should watch it.

It's not a question of flaws. Light Yagami is a morally repulsive character with almost nothing but flaws, but his over the top behavior is funny so I like him
E7 does not have a character like that in the main cast (Anemone arguably is but she's a side character)
On the other hand, you have a character like D-Boy from Tekkaman Blade. This is the type of character that E7 tried and failed to create several times over. D-Boy is a rough, anti-social guy, but he's a dangerous half-monster who knows he'll have to personally kill off his remaining family and is slowly losing his memories and dragging other people into danger. You can understand where he's coming from and it's admirable how he tries to be a hero even with so many burdens

What did you find so confusing about it? The only part I didn't and can't understand was how too many organisms would cause the world to end (seriously how the fuck does that work?) but everything else with the hivemind coral was pretty straight forward and I really enjoyed it.

What? They're all in rebellion against the corrupt government. How's that not a novel goal? And most of the major characters have tragic backstories. I guess the show just didnt work for you but I had the opposite reaction.

But it’s not really like Eva at all. It has a little Nerve, SEELE corporate espionage and a-morale experimentation on godlike otherworldly beings but it’s never as much in forefront like in Eva

A problem with E7 is that the supporting cast is realistically irrational at times, like they are just dicks. But the show doesn't really give them enough scenes for us to forgive their dickness and it just feels like bullying for no fucking reason. Which is realistic but can be narratively unsatisfying, especially when the show wants you to root for them to save the world.

All the tormenting does make the little victories that Renton gets from time to time endearing even if they are as small as rubbing shoulders with your crush.

I looked up the alternate retellings (movies) and the sequel series and it seems like they were badly received. Such a shame.

The original members from the SOF and whoever joined them are quickly established as incredibly flawed, and Holland gets exposed as a deadbeat as early as episode 3, but there are lots of scenes that develop the nuance of him and Talho, but not much for the rest of the crew. They give Gidget a great rapport with Eureka later on though.

Besides the soundtrack, no. In the original anime, the staff, mostly the female staff, pushed hard enough that they did not do the writer's super el super tragico depresso maximus ending and instead did a happy one. Since then, every single piece of E7 media that has come out has tried to destroy the original series in one way or another. The manga had the original ending which sucks balls, and the side character romance was worse too. AO had a literal retcon cannon in it, the original series simply never happened. The movies are one of those weird re-sequel things and he does the same character assassination bullshit. He has spent like twenty fucking years of butthurt on this series.

AO, the direct sequel, comes back to all the way to dewey being right with total coral death was the only real option and takes place in alt universe earth where they fight the magic universe police niggas who are angry that coral and do space/time warping bullshit. As a show it starts out ok and just kinda explodes near the end(after a steady decline) with too many retarded plot points that werent really resolvable.
POketful of rainbows(the retelling of the original e7) was rather awful by doing things like making Nirvash a plushie mascot character that meows.
Hi-evo is a weird mixed bag because all the movies are basically unrelated and the most enjoyment possible is to just go into them thinking theyre standalone sci-fi works, and they do that fairly well honestly. Dumb takes just like AO about meta narratives make people reasonably upset though.
All of them have great prodution values and are worth a wath desu. (but they get retarded)

I think only Gonzy, Jobs, Woz and Hap are the only ones who don't get an episode where they are part of the focus. Hap is advising Holland enough that you get their relationship. Gonzy is just sitting in the background until he is revealed to be a Coralion.

After Moondoggie and Renton had their bonding over Renton being the new newbie. Gidget mentions part of why she sought out Eureka was a bit jealous of Talho and Hilda. They fleshed out the dynamics of the rest of the crew pretty well through smaller scenes.

And yet Pocketful and Astral Ocean were better than the first series. We need to be honest, the pacing in E7 was garbage that dragged on way longer than it should have, fat needed to be trimmed. That and it didn't have enough action scenes. Pocketful and AO had more action scenes and by default were better (also the music in those weren't annoying). It's time to admit sometimes original entries are not gold standards, just the first and nothing else. Kind of like how everyone praises Godzilla 1954, but if we're being honest with all it's mistakes it wouldn't be top 10 as it had too many technical errors even by 50s standards and later entries just did things better.

Truth was an utterly worthless character and a walking 'whatever the writers think is a convenient ability to have this week'. The ending with apparently this all being precipitated by the original world being obliterated by scub coral(but thats ok, because now eureka doesnt have to sacrifice herself to save it!) added nothing but spite for the original. Writing wise both pocketful of rainbows and AO were just a mess that couldve used a great deal of trimming, but i agree the music was better in AO at least.

Eureka Seven is partially inspired by the book Blood Music and a very outdated idea of the Observer Effect.
The "Observer Effect" a scientific theory that states you can't measure something without interfering with it. For example you can't take the tire pressure of a care without letting some air out of the tire to measure it.
The idea is that when you have too many observers taking observations at the same time reality becomes unstable and collapses. Because the Corallians were an alien hivemind the amount of "Observers"(Or consciousnesses) became way too concentrated in one space and reality was starting to break down. This is what was going on in those episodes where Renton got sucked into the Corallian.

The show ends with Renton, Eureka and the Nirvash getting enough of the Corallians leaving to stop this collapse from happening.

Eventually hundreds of years after the series Humans and Corallians would have racemixed enough to create a new kind of consciousness that can allow both races to continue to exist.

it has some good moral messages i think but besides that i couldn't really get attached to the characters or mecha
the mecha on their own is pretty okay for kawamori's work. the surfboard thing is sort of a unique way of expressing movement through the air with wind resistance but there's parts of it that make you wish you were just looking at normal mecha action. the mecha and setting conflicts are also largely pushed aside at the end to just have a happy love story ending so if you get into what little there is it ends up getting kinda disappointing. if you're there to learn some morals you'll like it, but i can't really recommend the show otherwise

One thing is that they seem so flawed and unprofessional that they don't give the impression of a former elite military outfit, and none of them (except possibly Holland) seem like having anything like the abilities to back that up. Their behaviour is more like clique stoners than air jocks and the latter would make more sense.

The Izumo crew was much more likeable and interesting that I wish they sunk gekkostate earlier on. It seemed like they changed sides to let the good guys have at least a few likeable characters for once.
