I've had similar experiences at cons, which is part of the reason I didn't go this year, and I think what hits hardest for me is the thought of "If I can't fit in here, do I really fit in anywhere? Do I belong anywhere?" and I hate having to grapple with that thought most times that I go to cons.

I'm gonna pick myself back up and go next year though. I regret not going this time because, at the end of the day, I think it's better to go and have the experience than not. I can't expect to come away with new, lifelong friends, but I can just try to relax and enjoy myself and hopefully do it in the presence of people who are chill with hanging out with me too.

A lot of volunteers and staff do it for free badges or to cozy up to a clique. Some are decent depending on what the responsibilities include. Otherwise it can suck because not everyone clearly communicates with each other while some wander off and just don't help and not everything is clearly labeled and made tard proof.
The help is nice and more hands make for easier work. But five pairs of hands does not mean you have five capable workers.

I'm personally happy with this year. I consider it a big success. I also know that some volunteers and staff have their heart in the right place but just do not have the background or general experience to be utilized fully. I don't know of any volunteers that have had their badges pulled due to lack of hours so it isn't that bad. I don't think this problem will go away. If different departments want to improve and expand, it will require more hands or a general higher skill level to maintain everything. Not everyone good will stay in place and not everyone bad will learn to do better. I think as long as we have a really solid skeleton, we'll be fine. We'll only know next year.
