seriously though i think it's a cool engine. first ever time really dealing with mopars and learning how even though they sold less back then compared to gm or ford, they always punched above their weight when it came to the engineering.

probably the one thing that has really survived all these years is that human-engineered soul. they really do still build their cars with the idea that people will be owning them, first-time mechanics will be poking around inside and fixing stuff and doing dumb mods. everything is sensibly laid out and easy to get to even when you get dumb shit like a battery in a front bumper, it's not like ford who will hide the entire central vacuum accumulator system in there with no access except to take the entire fender off or chevy that just barfs components all over the engine bay without any regard for what they're next to so you get ecus that sit directly in exhaust heat.

if anybody in the us were to go outside right now and look at the oldest cars still driving around i guarantee they will almost all be mopars and toyotas. you can count the 2000-2010 fords and chevies on one hand i bet.

and to be fair mopars small cars of that era were mostly terrible too, all the automatic calibers should be dead or dying, but the old pacifica, durangos, neons, ja platform avengers, and 3.5 LX just seem to keep going and going. i even see a surprising amount of LH cars about still, even neons and pts.

>Dave: Iโ€™ve heard stories about the LX being delayed to make it rear wheel drive after the Mercedes deal, that there was a design that was replaced.

>That story sounds like it would have been more like what was going on back about the time the 300M was out there. Could we make it a rear-wheel drive car? We could have, but we werenโ€™t ready for that yet marketwise or anything. So no; once we got going on the car, it was pretty much what you saw. It was V6s and then Hemi.

>How is this '91 four-banger as quick as my 2015 V8-powered 300C?
Pigfat is part of it, as previously noted.

Also the 300C Hemi is basically the R/T package in the Challenger and Charger and those don't have limited slip along with fairly narrow tires. Sling a limited slip under there and it'll knock most of a second off the 0-60 both due to the increased traction and also because the car won't be working against you with the throttle and brakes trying to find some traction. Get the rest of that second off with 295 or 305 tires instead of the factory 245's. Get set up to tune and you can knock off a bit more by cutting the torque limiting down but that'll show more on longer runs than 0-60 which won't have that many shifts.

Another thing here too, old turbo cars like that one launched fairly softly since it would take a bit for boost to come up, even when power-loaded against the brakes, so it acted a bit like a passive launch control improving that old car's 0-60 over what it would have been with a more powerful N/A engine.

this was also the engine with the water pump internal leak issues and the class action lawsuit that nobody liked. the full fat 3.5 was better but still a boat anchor
the penta is on a completely different planet from those two

>>28473497
>>we already had the 2.7 and 3.5L from other shitty chryslers
yeah they were left over from the water pump debacle and used while the pstar was still in development.
the 2009 challenger v6 had a damn 3.5 and a 4-speed ultradrive, not even the nag1, because that just what was laying around the factory at the time.

keep in mind, this is dodge, while they're building these cars the company is perpetually imploding around them and even if it takes a couple shakes of the parts-bin they somehow manage to shit out undeniably perfect god machines adored the world over.

dodges "new" engines are often first spotted in trucks and suvs. it's working that way again with the hemi coming back, even though if you count the rango it never really even left.

according to engineer interviews, actual pstar development started around the same time the LX was being finalized which would have been '03, '04. The project to replace the LH engines started in '99. people started actually hearing about it outside Chrysler in 2006, then there was a recession and chrysler went bankrupt, Cerberus tried to kill the Pentastar and buy VQs instead until it was proven the Pstar was both more efficient and cheaper to build, and the Pstar enticed Fiat to buy Chrysler and develop the Ferrari/Maserati F160 from it which ultimately lead to the Ferrari F163 120 degree V6 that just won Le Mans.

the driving posture of the challenger might the most comfortable a human could possibly ever be. it's not like soft or couchlike but ergonomically perfect like a herman miller chair where they worked out the perfect angle to rest your elbows at and other smart shit. any excuse to take the long way is a good one.

I'm in need of new tires for my '03 ram 1500, and I've got a good deal on those 37 inch humvee bajas. However I am not really a tire person and different websites and forums say I need different things to make this fit. So far have been told I need a lift kit of indeterminate height, 3/4 inch spacers so the rims go over the calipers, and that's it. Is that it? Does this even work? It'd be real nice for hunting if it works.

>is that supposed to disable MDS or something?
yeah you can disable it completely. That one specifically is for 11-14 chargers, the 15 and up challys/chargers I think have a different computer system.
Lets you change a few other things and put a put tune on it (one of the provided generic tunes or a canned one). Can disable the traction control completely which even my 5.7 absolutely roasts the tires at the slightest throttle, but it auto-resets to default traction control after the cars been turned on and off twice. All the other changes stay just the hardwired traction control. Basically got to pull the fuse if you want to truly disable it on the 11 - 14 model years.

They do. 15+ have to have the PCM software modded via some hacks (such as a boot attack, etc.) to be able to accept changes from "unauthorized" sources like a tuner. 18+ also have a "Security Module" that has to be bypassed before a tuner will work.

18+ also have gay shit that trips a "ecu code has been tampered" flag iirc. technically they all do but the newer models are more picky about what constitutes tampering. doesn't really matter because if you're into a tuner the warranty dooesn't matter but it may bother perfectionists, as well it throws a silent code.

I really want to redo the plastic gauge bezel in my 11 challenger with some bondo and hydro dip woodgrain to style it more like the 1970 model. Too bad I have no idea how to pull it off. I really don't like the looks of the fake carbon fiber or the stick on stuff. Next time I need tires, I'm getting some steelies painting them either argent silver or tri coat pearl red and they're gonna have fratzog dog dishes on them

woodgrain would be sick, i was thinking about doing something similar for my center console bezel
imo on the old interior i'd take the dash apart, get that plastic tombstone the cluster sits in, and just dip that full woodgrain. maybe the shifter surround too.

They can't be that much, if it's like 30$ and I go look at my account balance maybe I'll buy a spare and attempt it, my main issue is clear coating the hydrodip to protect it and keeping the chrome accents around the gauge holes protected, but that probably is just down to masking. My 1995 born self desires the woodgrain
