/CCG/ Classic Car General: Are we going to do this right this time? Edition
>For Classics made from 1979 or older, with few exceptions.
>Everybody has their own taste, but some tastes are wrong. If you aren't sure if your car is classic or not, it's not.
>Your Honda Miata doesn't belong here.
>US, Euro, Jap, or whatever.
>Post your classic, your work on it, your hackery, and get advice.
>Any and all discussion about classics welcome, but may not necessarily generate responses; don't get butthurt.
>Period correct performance > cosmetics.
>Metal > plastic.
>Classic shitbox > modern shitbox.
>JBweld and RTV can fix anything
>If you see rust there is more.
>Rust and bodywork are the most difficult thing to repair.
>Electrical work is difficult until you stop reading forum posts and buy a multimeter.
>Low oil pressure? Worn mains and rod bearings. Use lucas and 15W40 until you afford a rebuild.
>Do NOT buy a classic and plan to pay someone to work on it. You need to be able to do 90% or more of the work or you will go broke.
>You will spend twice your budget, unless you have years of experience. If the salty old hands agree, it's true.
>No one cares about your MPG
>No one cares if you fellate feline phalluses
>If you can't tune a carb you might literally be retarded
>Nothing is as easy as it seems

If it's only a year of exposure as you say it is, it's probably only bad around the trim studs and the rest underneath is fine. If you are up for a minor bit of rust repair(worth it), buy it, but make sure to lowball the fuck out of him.

I'd be willing to try honestly but I've already got a project going and repairs for my daily to do and I don't want another barn ornament urgently in need of bodywork.
Idea was for this to be my new daily anyways, sick of newer cars and just want a tall-geared carbed v8 to last me the next few decades

Thats the problem with vinyl tops.
The cancer started 40 years ago when it rained on the drive home.
The occasional rain while sitting at the grocery store was just feeding those initial stages. Being left outside for a year was just GNC Weight Gainer 5000 fuel to accelerate the fuckiness that is eating that car from the inside out.

Its not superficial.
Thats some serious degradation to the point youre going to have to strip that vinyl and replace sheetmetal.
Guaranteed.

>replace sheetmetal
Impossible for a colonnade. You'll never ever ever find top sheetmetal since the vast majority of these cars have the vinyl roof (and will also be rotted) and they're not popular enough to warrant repro metal

the previous owner said that the vinyl top was redone though, so it was at least 2022 or so when it was done. but it's been sitting in my driveway for a year now and gonna be there for at least another month because i'm still waiting on shit to arrive.
mind you, in that entire time i haven't seen any cancer spread but i'm not sure if it's all just hidden underneath or if the upholsterer actually did a good job sealing it.
Anonymous No.28550376 >>28550460
You guys might be overblowing the vinyl top deal. My pops has a vinyl top mustang that sat outside for 3 years in the 2000s after having been garaged, yet daily driven from the factory prior to that. Upon resto, there was nary an issue with the roof under the vinyl. Was quite surprising, honestly.
Anonymous No.28550408 >>28550460
Vinyl tops came about in the beginning of the uni-body era, when they would fuck a roof+body pairing so badly that it should have gone straight to the crusher. But some asshole figured out that if you just buried the shit body work under vinyl you could still sell it. They ought to have been illegal, but they got so popular they just started putting them on everything. I'd only own one if it was gifted to me.

Older than 75 was the traditional cutoff before you found 4chan.
That was when there was a paradigm shift in design across all manufacturers and countries.

It wasn't just a "we think these cars are cool but these arent" type of crowd decision.
It was a change in the induatry in how cars were designed, engineered, built and even prepped.
You went from zinc plating on body panels underneath paint for rust prevention to not even using primer and using static to adhere paint.
Design elements like having the chassis lowered onto a pre-assembled fwd engine/trans/suspension cradle unit that made maintenance a nightmare.

A Classic vehicle is something specific.
Its not just old.
It has design and engineering elements that vary greatly from "modern" cars.

It went to the machine shop to get decked and bigger valves installed anyways so I wasn't too worried about it
I was also immediately vindicated when I went out to check main bearing clearances and found the inside of the engine where I forgot to spray with wd40 was indeed sporting a light coat of flash rust.

It's not exactly simple.
Unfortunately those are the years when electronics came into play. Not what you'd consider computers (they are) but enough components dependent on other components that once you start gutting shit it causes other faults. Electronic feedback carbs dont like it when they lose signal from EGRs and such. Not to mention 10 miles of vacuum lines.
You either spend years getting everything in order to run as factory or gut it all and install an earlier setup (carb, distributor etc)

Its more than that and every vehicle is different.
The emissions vacuum lines are all tied in with the heater/AC vent controls and can be an absolute nightmare to go through.
Tach wont work and you'll have a permanent red "emissions" warning light on in the instrument cluster.
These seem minor, sure. Pull the bulb for the emissions warning, run the tach off an MSD 6AL.
But thats not a complete list. Once you tear into one you really.need to know what youre doing or you wind up with a shitbox with a butchered harness and half the shit doesn't work.

The Mark V was going to be scrapped due to a bad carb adjustment and worn interior. It's an OK car for a beater and a solid donor, but restoring a Diamond Jubilee Edition is a fool's errand.

also gotta get a momentary switch to to hook up to the high beams to quickly flash them whenever needed. seems like I can just hook up a constant 12v feed to one terminal of the switch, then the other wire goes straight to the high beam terminal on the existing foot switch.

I quit posting about the A/C saga on my Newport because it was just getting fucking ridiculous, but I finally got it sorted. Spent probably 10 hours collectively swapping seals, trying different installation methods, etc. Carbon seals are so damn finicky. Went through two reproduction santech seals that were crap and didn't work.
I finally ended up making one good seal from two old seals. Took the good rubber piece from my original compressor, and the good carbon piece from the compressor my buddy gave me. Soaked them in oil for two days. Meticulously cleaned the sealing surfaces of the carbon and installed the front cover, turning the bolts 1/2 turn at a time so it seated perfectly flat. Held vacuum and pressure immediately. Charged it with propane. Blowing icy cold now. Probably not even going to bother ordering the Frosty Cool 12a honestly, it's working really well and I don't feel like discharging it and risking losing the seal again. Probably won't happen, but still.
I was just about ready to say fuck it and convert to a sanden compressor, but I really didn't feel like spending $700+ for that. If this seal fucks up, I feel confident that an NOS seal from eBay will work. Even if they are $80, it's better than converting.
I was basically battling Chinese manufacturing standards on a very low tolerance finicky part. A tale as old as time.

nice. my concern with straight propane is the higher pressure it has, it's fairly higher than r12 and r134a. might shorten compressor life, or the life of another component in the system that'll then require you to take everything apart all over again.
Anonymous No.28569029 >>28569067 >>28573138
>>28569016
Yes...I was thinking about this. However, it's not running crazy high. High side is about 195 at 90 degrees ambient temperature. R134 will run into the 230s sometimes. So I think it will be fine for now, but you are correct. If it continues working well, I probably will order the Frosty Cool. It is supposed to run lower pressures than R12 and r134.
The low side is doing something weird I've never seen before. It's running at about 45-50 psi at idle then drops to 25-30 when it's revved up. Still blows cold at idle but it blows colder when revved up. Is this because of the propane or because of the EPR valve? It has that valve in addition to the TXV to keep the evaporator from freezing up, because it does not have a clutch cycling switch. Not exactly sure how it works, but I know other manufacturers had similar valves for that reason. I've never worked on an old system like this before, so I don't know what is normal.
Anonymous No.28569067 >>28569077

>>28569077
yeah should be ok then. preferred way to charge is by weight but pressure also works too.

Buying a built engine just to have it sit in your garage instead of someone else's while you look for the perfect chassis to drop it into is a recipe for disaster.
If you have a car thats ready for an engine now, great.
If you just want it because its a great deal and youre stockpiling parts for another project you're about to start, great.

I don't doubt you one bit. Been running it for about a week now. 95 degrees and under it's working good, but over that it's struggling to blow cold, just cool. It probably does not have enough refrigerant in it, because I charged it by pressure and I don't want to run the pressures higher.
It's been holding good so far. I'll probably order the Frosty Cool and charge it with the correct amount. That stuff isn't that expensive anyway.

Supposedly someone else has put an NV3500 into a third gen and claims it bolts up to the mount and doesn't need a driveshaft. im welcome to the 350 that's spun a rod or whatever. I ripped the interior out and fixed the tilt column so I could move it and that's all I've touched my car so far. Mustang got cut up, bought a new welder and zipped the patches in, painted it, its about to be sitting on its wheels again. Shifter is out and clutch pedal is in. I refrained from tubing it or getting the MM K member, I did toss the manifolds and V6 exhaust for a full kit with long tubes. Good cars. I also feel the same way about the mid-90's Roadmaster that we had the regular version of and not the woody station wagon. Still have a 1997 Deville too. FWD unfortunately and in dire need of CV axel replacement.

Semi-elated-wise, almost finished installing the new 3-point seatbelts in my 1973 Stingray.

Pro: Car came with all the appropriate bolts and trim except the rear seat cut through.

Con: Retrobelts fuckers don't have any of their holes sized right and I have to use a pyramid bit to open things up to the correct GM standard bolt size. Paid $330 dollars for this shit. They don't even differentiate left from right despite calling it a full kit.

Totally drilling and bolting in a later Camero seat-belt guide. I want to be able to remove the thing easily when I need to access the back or the battery. Putting a belt through the seat itself is full retard.
