Have you done any shifter rebuilding? Take the trim out and see if your shifter boot is busted, most likely is.

If your problems persist with a new engine then it isn't the engine buddy :-(
Anonymous No.28547208

I put a new trans in, I used 10w30 in the turret. The shifter is fine, but the old gasket could be passing some smells through. It's dry underneath.
Same engine. But many things around it have been replaced, like new fuel pump and injectors z etc.
Could be tps acting up. Maybe bad wires. I should test continuity. I already replaced a few connectors and some wires that had corrosion.

My NB2 is making a strange intermittent high pitched scittering sound above 30 mph. Paired with a vibration from the transmission tunnel so I assume it's from there but it's hard to be certain

What does the miata mean by this?

My wipers and windows go up and down kinda slow. I dont have another Miata to compare it to, so im not sure if its supposed to be this slow.
even with a brand new battery its slow. its even slower with the engine off off.
my charge voltage is 14.4, and 12.2v with engine off
I installed new window bushings, and I applied lube to the slide rails for the window motors, I also cleaned up the old gunk on the wiper linkage and applied fresh lube there. it made a noticeable difference, but by much.
are the motors just worn or is there some resistive drain somewhere, or is this normal?

Hello,
My NA Miata has weak headlights. I bought pic related when I first got my car.
The light output from these is bad. I looked through all my emails to find what I bought. I noticed that these say "fog lights."
Is this why my headlights suck?
If so, may you please recommend me a good pair of headlights for my Miata, no LED please.
Thanks frens!

anons, my car still stutters.
its fine 90% of the time.
then randomly im driving and it no longer wants to accelerate and is losing RPMs.
It does not want to rev higher. feels like 2step.
this goes away after 5 seconds. comes back 3 minutes later, then doesnt show up again for rest of the day.
sometimes its fine for a week
sometimes it does off and on for the entire drive.
ive looked into a bunch of things and replaced everything except the intake and TPS. Both have been tested.
new fuel pump, new injectors, new ignitor, new coils, new plugs and wires, cleaned up corroded wires, many new plugs, many new sensors. engine is super clean, no varnish at all.
ive had this issue ever since i got the car, everytime I replace something or think I found the problem, it keeps coming back.
compression is good. #3 is 20 psi lower than the rest. plugs all look good. engine runs a bit rich.

What could this be? TPS acting up randomly?
knock sensor detecting knock?

its a 1.8 in an NA6.

ive only been replacing consumable components or iffy looking stuff.

my plan is to go standalone, that would elimate the maf, a new TPS, and a wideband. unfortunately money has been tight. i dont have the $3k to throw at the car right now.

you're obviously dealing with something that would cause the engine to cut timing in a major way. a malfunction mass air flow sensor would definitely make the engine think something is way wrong. i would say it's a likely cause and probably what i would have been looking at first before anything else because it's cheap and easy to access.

Bad coil, it's ignition related. Mine did the same thing, it would be fine then randomly feel like it dropped 2 cylinders for a few seconds then go normal again. If you replaced the coils recently then send them back under warranty, or your gonna p0420 away and destroy your cat.

I replaced my ignitor and have a brand new Bosch ignition coils and related wiring.
I also peeled back a lot of the wiring, check and replaced corroded connectors, found a corroded wire I cut back a few inches and I rewrapped the wires with harness tape when I had the engine out for easy access.
This did not make difference.

A lot of stuff listed there, sorry if you mentioned this and I didn't see it, but have you considered the CAS? I know you don't want to spend a lot of money but it sounds similar to this scenario: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-H4sNLio5Ec
Anonymous No.28552075 >>28552095

Thanks for this info. I did not look over or suspect the cas.
I do have an issue with the car dying when cold. It does not want to idle well until it's warmed up.
It will occasionally die at idle after warming, but not at speed. At least being in gear wont let it.
Next time it surges I'll take it out of gear and see if it idles normally or if it dies.

If I'm not mistaken, you can delete the cas and get a new crank angle wheel at the crank pulley when you go standalone.
Is that correct?

>>28552075
>If I'm not mistaken, you can delete the cas and get a new crank angle wheel at the crank pulley when you go standalone.
>Is that correct?
I mean it's just providing a signal to the ECU, and the cam position is tied to the crank position by the timing belt, so in theory you could do that. I'm not an expert though, and I have an NB so again not the best resource for that.
Anonymous No.28552133

here is the pic of the back of my 1.8
it looks to be a 1.6 CAS.
it also looks to be adjusted all the way to one end. I wonder why that is. I did check timing and its at 10 degrees.
there are previous alignment marks, its close to them now.

I will check timing again, and move that CAS and see what changes. maybe this is why its running rich?

is the cas serviceable? are there contacts that corrode like a dizzy? i see it has a back panel that comes off. im not finding any info on it being taken apart
Anonymous No.28552164 >>28553640
I warmed up the car, then I put it in diag mode and loosened up the CAS.
The engine would not stay running unless i feathered the throttle, and the check engine light flashed 8 times which indicates a malfunctioning maf.
i turned off the car, replugged the maf plug, and now it idles fine, and also flashing code 1, and 8 now.

There are two timing marks on the pulley, whats the correct setting?
Mark 1 at T and mark 2 at 10?
Anonymous No.28552212
alright, i went for a quick test drive.
i had the timing set wrong, the new crank with the 2 marks through me off.
i fixed it and set the 1st mark at T and 2nd mark at 10.
car seems to be less sluggish, but the issue is still there, albeit less pronounced.

it stumbled at idle going above 2k and was a bit sluggish revving up to 4k

overall seem a bit better. now to diagnose those codes.
Anonymous No.28552222

fwiw, toyota used to use a cam position sensor on their 7mgte engine then for the 2jz they went to a crank position sensor.
seems like the flex of the timing belt at high speeds must've been significant enough to warrant the relocation.

it sounds like an engine management/sensor issue but have you checked throttle cable tension and that the valve in the throttle body is actuating smoothly?

Life was more simple with a steel cable and a carburetor. Still could be worse at least you don't have fly by wire.

Yes, I have looked over the throttle. the TB was taken apart and rebuilt.
Everyone is pointing fingers at components that either get deleted or replaced when going standalone.
I'm not buying a new MAF, or CAS for $200-300 each. I plan to get a trigger wheel to use with the hall effect sensors for the 1.8 when I go standalone. The MAF is going to be deleted, the CAS hole will get plugged, and the TPS will be upgraded to a linear version. I am considering coil on plugs as well.

Right now, I'm trying to find a diagram of what the CAS looks like on the inside. Google search has gone to shit, I cannot find any pictures of one taken apart, or diagrams.
I found a few places selling the CAS circuit boards, pic related. I see what looks like metal contacts like you would find in a distributor, maybe they just need a cleaning?
Guess I'll take my CAS off and see what I can find when I take it apart.

I've been thinking about my timing all morning, I think it was set too far advance. Maybe all the stuttering was the knock sensor preventing pre-detonation?

ive never been there as a group. ive do want to pack a tent in my miata, and drive down there, spend the night at a campground, hit up the road, and then drive back. preferably off season

the smokey mountains are nice, grab some hiking gear. watch out for bears, either cc or have mace.

Thanks for the input. I'm eventually going to swap in a bigger turbo and shoot for ~350hp, so my only concern is how well the torsen would hold up to that. It would be nice to get the diff sorted now and not have to worry about replacing it with something else down the line. Also, what size are your injectors and are you using the oem fuel pump?
Anonymous No.28558129 >>28558233
>>28558062
Torsen diff won't break until 400+ or so. I'm pretty sure they're rated for atleast 400 ft/lb.
Thing you'll need to be more concerned about is the tranny. 5 speed is glass over 300nm/220ftlb and will kill itself down the road.
I'm using 720cc Bosch EV14 injectors (Kraken turbo kit) and the OEM pump. You'll probably want to replace that pump for a higher flowing one along with fuel upgrades such as a fuel pressure regulator.

The Miata is just fine at 280hp desu, don't think I'd want more on it here in Europe. For higher power trips I have this shitbox instead
Anonymous No.28558233 >>28558292
>>28558129
I guess they're more reliable than I thought. Not too many 3.6 diffs floating around my neck of the woods, so I'll probably get stuck re-gearing one. At that price point, it makes me wonder if going with an aftermarket diff that I can verify the mileage on wouldn't be the better move.

I found this thread on reinforcing a common failure point on 6 speeds a while back: https://www.miataturbo.net/suspension-brakes-drivetrain-49/aisin-az6-6-speed-gearbox-%93circlip-mod%94-105799/
Looking into doing that before I swap my 6 speed in.

I'm assuming you've also got forged pistons & rods at 280hp, so the next thing to break would be the crank at 400hp+. I agree that 280hp is a nice sweet spot, but I think it would be a shame not to push it a little more once I get the itch again in 5 years or so. The roads are open enough around here that she could still stretch her legs at 300hp+

I'm running everything stock aside from the turbo, setup has lasted me over 10.000km with 0 issues. Running Motul 300V 5W40 and a 6 speed box with oil changes every 4000km or so. As long as you've got some mechanical sympathy the BP blocks don't die that quick. Pistons are good for 350 hp, rods about 320. Opening the motor only really needs to happen once you go above 250ftlb of torque, something I'm still far below.

I'm gonna try and save up for a nicely priced (12k? idk Facebook marketplace stateside) red nc2 by next year. I'm selling my childhood consoles and games which should get me like a 10th of the way there.

Also plan on selling my motorcycle for around 1.5-2k. my car got beat up (not by me) after an accident so it's not worth too much, maybe 2k.

Truthfully I can buy the car outright but it's hard to justify spending that much money on a want. Maybe if I sell enough things and junk I have to get me halfway there, I'll cover the rest.

Won't be scca compliant (sub 30Β° bracing), I'll lose about 2 inches of seat travel, but it will be a hell of a lot stronger than the factory loops. 1.5" x .120 wall DOM. Main hoop going down to the floor behind the seats, and the bracing to the cross bar where the OEM hoops mount
Still trying to figure out how to go down to 4x114.3 15 inch rims. I want the hayashi yayoi wheels. well if you drive at 40mph, in 2nd gear, near redline, park it, and turn off the engine, it aint gonna magically cool down on a humid 95F day.
thats what the overflow tank is for.
I usually sit for a minute after driving hard to let it cool down. ive bad turbo timers in all my old shitboxes just for this reason.

this is the first time the miata has done this
I dont have an AC fan if that matters

How old is your radiator cap? Worth throwing a good one at it. It may not be able to hold enough cooling system pressure, causing your coolant to boil once it stops flowing and the fans turn off.

If you park near dark people they sometimes slash soft tops which is like $1500 to replace. Slightly better sound insulation in the RF, but worse buffeting with the top retracted vs a soft top that goes flat. Notably the RF is not structural, so from a safety/rollover standpoint you're no better in the RF, it's just plastic and thin aluminum it will crumple like paper in a crash. Looks is a tossup. Soft top is lighter weight by about 100lbs and you can flip it up and down while driving (RF requires you to stop), and the hand mechanism is much faster than the motor going up and down (but old people or bad shoulders means you might not be able to do the soft top yourself).

The AC is super powerful and the heater is too, so it's not a problem at all. I've had a few feet of snow on the soft top and I just brushed it off, nothing was damaged. Non-convertible owners don't realize but the best time for a vert is actually dawn/dusk/night in the summer. Peak sunshine is actually kinda shitty, sitting in stop and go traffic on highway with zero cover above you fucking sucks. the main thing is to learn where the bite point is.
you'll also want to learn how much rpm you want to be at when you shift so you can rev appropriately in order to shift smoothly. i think i struggled with downshifting before i learned about rev matching.
>steep hills
i'm not sure how hilly your area is but modern miatas have hill start assist so you don't roll backwards. you can also use the handbrake until you get in gear. use more gas than you would if you weren't on an incline.
>stalling in traffic

That said the above should apply only for the EU: I seem to recall the US had a slightly different arrangement between the two, but I'm not sure. I'm saying this because sure my Fiata sings at high RPM, but at a more normal pace it's a civilized car, while the Abarth is way louder across the range.

I just spent every weekend for 3 months wrenching on mine so I will be taking a nice break from working on it if I can help it, especially since it's the hottest time of year

Moving forward with the ND RF roll bar that doesn't prevent the top from functioning. The tubes, cut and bent, will be about 950 shipped to me, only about 10 bucks in grade 10.9 hardware, I need maybe 1.5 square foot of 3/8 plate for the mounting brackets, and then the welding will be free because I'm doing it myself. Not sure if I'll go with powder coating or just rattle can it

Doing my first brake change in the next couple days since I put the wilwood calipers on the front. I hope getting the calipers off with the blue loctite on the bolts isn't a bitch

Why does the caliper need to come off? The advantage of a fixed caliper is that you just pull a pin and slide the pads out, no need to unbolt the whole caliper.

Blue loctite is weak enough it can be removed by hand tools, it's red loctite that requires heat to budge
