Zamn, the /ccg/ discord really is better than this gay fag infested site now.
I'm looking to get my first car; won't use it very often. Mostly a toy but occasionally used on the weekend to do some motorway miles. Thinking of getting a classic because I'm a pretentious cunt and have fallen in love with my classic cycle (which I use on the daily, absolutely do not miss the mod cons of a newer cycle. Worth it for the looks.)
My question is how stupid an idea this is considering I cannot wrench shit; I barely get by on the old cycle. I live seconds away from a very good garage, though.

It's not a *bad* idea, per se, but it depends on what the car is, and how much money you make; your inability to wrench and tinker means even the smallest shit will require trip to the garage, eating into your wallet and reducing the amount of time you're able to drive. No idea what your budget is, but try and get a very nice and well sorted example of whatever it is you want, just so you don't have a "rolling restoration" that will spend most of it's time in the garage, rather than on the road.
>>28585501

5 grand. was looking at those little midgets. some really good examples near me; seems crazy that people pour thousands into these things only to sell them on for a fraction of what they spent, but I suppose that's the hobby.

You could probably find a well sorted Midget for that kind of money, so at that point it comes down to your income. If you can support the added maintenance costs, then a Midget would be a decent choice for a first classic, though if you're doing motorway miles, you should check what kind of RPM the engine is turning at 70mph. I don't think Midgets ever came with overdrives, so you could be at 4,000+ on the Motorway, which isn't exactly comfortable for you or the car.

I thinks it's a phycological thing. People are willing to spent shit loads on something that's already theirs and they're going to be keeping for a long period of time, but at the same time they're unable warrant spending a decent chunk of change on a car that's arguably past it's sell-by date, and will likely need more money spent regardless of condition.

on an unrelated note, the headlight relay harness i got has somewhat shit terminations; in some of the terminals i see one or two strands not actually crimped down, it's rustling my jimmies but not sure if it'll warrant having to remake the entire harness.

Wonderful. Can't wait to see it back together again.
My '79 280zx is losing a lot of power in the morning. Vacuum was super low, like in the 9inhg-12inhg range at idle. It gets better with heat but while it's cold part throttle actually gets it to rev higher than full throttle. Started along with a whistling sound that now turned into a hiss, smoke tested the intake side and there were zero vacuum leaks. Since the engine sounds somewhat muffled, I'm going to do an exhaust backpressure test. Hopefully that's it and I don't have to go messing around with rotting wires and connections. Wish me luck, br/o/s.

When I had the fairmonts I googled a 302 swap and the consensus was the 200 crossmember was different and all the rest were the same. Double checked it last year when i bought the sn95. 4.6 cross member is different you can keep the V6 one to do a 302 swap. Go to put the engine in the car, shifters ran into the back of the cutout and the mounts are over an inch in front of the k member. Go double check this, everyone says it fits. Pulled a v8 crossmember already from a fox, googled that, says in 88 they widened the crossmember an inch where the control arms mount, slot the rear flange and it bolts in. I got mine from a 87 MkVII so I'm looking into this, sounds weird, Googled struts, hubs, strut tower braces, the geometry never changed 79-93. Fuck it I have a measuring tape. They're identical. 22.75 in the front, 30 in the back, 15 at the rack. The rear flange is 2" wider on the sn95 no way in hell you're slotting the bolt holes. Trying to get a English speaking phone jockey at bmr or upr to tell me the mount height of their k members and I'll be buying one of them. you couldn't trust a Ford fanboy to tell you how many lug nuts their car has

cordless ratchet (this saves you so much goddamn time)
impact extensions
set of impact sockets
general socket and wrench set

C clamp, or two
hammer(s) and mallet(s)
screwdrivers (and get a long one too, surprisingly useful)

Don't start with electric wrenches. Feel is an extremely important part of mechanical work, and you're going to cross-thread and strip a lot of stuff that you wouldn't using a manual ratchet that you can feel when something isn't right. If you've got large stuff or things that you know will loosen and tighten properly, an impact is ok. I only use impact on large frame mounted type stuff, never on mechanical stuff with the engine or brakes or drive line. Besides, do some physical work so you don't look like a skinny twink or fat hambeast.

my plan when I got it a decade ago (for free) was to do a 20vt swap and aim for a 200whp 1700lb track car.
what I've actually done since getting it is:
clean it, replace the clutch, fix the fucked brakes, put e30 bbs wheels on it, put kw coilovers that make it miserable to drive around town, and let it sit (because it's miserable to drive)
It currently doesn't run because it needs the fuel lines cleaned out.
>order parts
>parts arrive two weeks later
>attempt to install parts and get car going
>something just happens to snap, break, or murphy's law
>order more parts
>wait more weeks
>something else goes wrong
i'm so close bros, i'm so close but so damn tired.
pray for me that my car moves freely and stops without issues. i just want one month before i need to put her in storage.

Maybe I'm retarded, though, I should have checked with AAA if they could just send a guy out for free or something. I just don't want to use up my free assistance for the year or whatever just in case I actually break down on the road and need a tow.
Maybe I should have called them from the start. apparently they can send someone out for "minor repairs" and save me a couple bucks because I'm pretty poor and I don't wanna buy an impact wrench yet that costs a third of what the car cost until I sell my blood or something

I was leaving lunch just now and they must have had a car show i didnt hear about there. Look at this classic!
I want to replace the rear diff in my 1976 Corvette with a more aggressive differential. I have plans to upgrade the engine and make it worthy of the small block title and pull this gay smog era shit off it, but there isn't much point in upgrading the front and keeping the back stock as I will just nuke something back there when I first get it set up. It has the TH350 and I have no desire or plans to switch to a 4speed manual or auto with OD. I am looking at 3.55, 3.70, and 3.90 rear diffs. Anyone have any experience? I posted before but life got in the way. I have used calculators and I find the RPMs, but real world input is appreciated. I mostly want to have that hood up, kicked in the back of your seat, tire melting fun of older cars, but also be able to handle driving on the back country roads here (50-65mph) without being miserable. The 3.90 is tempting for the visceral feel, but the 3.70 would be easier on the highway, but may leave me wanting moar. After this gets beefed up, the next is new cylinder heads, cam, stall converter, possibly stroke it to a 383. I am too beefy to get a 4 speed manual put in, these cars were made for the delicate manlets of 1970.

Final drive ratio will depend entirely upon the specs of the engine you choose to build. More specifically the camshaft specs, but that will be related to displacement/heads/etc of the rest of the engine.
Start thinking about the engine more and what you want its characteristics to be and that will lead you to a cam spec that would be appropriate. The cam manufacturer will have a recommendation for RPM at 60mph in Direct for that cam. You will then be able to choose a final drive ratio that complements the engine.
Being given a 71 fiat 124 spider. Sat since the 80s in various garages, doesn’t run and the motor is potentially seized. If I can’t (or don’t want to) get the original motor going, what would be a good swap? Lots of people say honda motors, but I’m not really into those.

Just my personal opinion, but more aggressive diffs aren't as much fun. I'm already in top gear at 40mph with my 4 speed manual in my 1973 Stingray with an uncucked 383. Even just trying to get to speed on the highway ramp today, I was starting to fishtail in 3rd on slightly-wet roads. You got plenty of juice.
Conversely, I had an aggressive diff on my tracker, but that was so I could put huge tires on it after I lifted it.

A 1.8 BP engine from a miata seems like the obvious option, though I think a V6 would be a better idea; a Dino V6 would be incredible as it'd be a period correct choice that was actually used by Fiat at the time, but I dread to think what that cost. The GM V6 is probably the best choice for burgers, and maybe the Jag/Ford V6 if euro?

>>28598857 said, check timing first as it's quite simple to do. I'm not sure if this carries over to your 600 engine, but another thing to check is (assuming you car has one) the carb spacer. The 500's and 126's have a plastic spacer between the carb and the head, and over time they become brittle and split when people reassemble them. If your engine has that spacer, check that it's not sucking in air from anywhere, be it from the gaskets or from damage.

I had them replaced with regular nuts as a cautionary measure in case I get another flat, and I had the worn out spare tire replaced.
Honestly, I could have done it myself, and in general I would prefer to do stuff myself, but with my limited budget and tools it made sense this time to pay someone to do it. Drove the car for the first time in a few weeks, finally.

master you can at least get it off rockauto or somewhere cheaper. can use the 1-1/8 bore units that were on the 67 year models.
i'm gonna use the wilwood 260-10922 in my setup because that already has 3/8-24 inverted flares, no tube nut adapters needed.
although if you don't want to use a prop valve, look at reducing the rear wheel cylinder bores. i know the A and B bodies it was common to downsize from the stock 15/16 cylinders to 13/16. I think the imperials have much larger bores though but in any case, if you find your rears locking up too soon on a skid pan, might be worth looking into going down a size or two.

Yes.
Did you take (did they even offer?) Home ec in high-school or did your grandma teach you how to sew?
Because carpets are pressure molded into the correct shape. To make one from scratch means you have to make patterns and sew that shit together.
I took home ec and helped granny when her sight was failing so that knowledge transfered over to car interiors.
You can make patterns out of butcher paper or cardboard. Vellum is badass but not sure what the normie price for it is (I did Autocad and got a shitload from work when we changed out the blueprint printer from a sheet type to one that uses a roll).
Stitching by hand is time consuming but you can use a larger needle and "thread" which I've found lasts longer.
And ya, I had a hemp phase and on one of my vehicles I used a ball of hemp yarn and I've been waiting for the drug dog but never gotten pulled over in it....

Yeah I might go for the cheap ones if needed but ideally I would have nice plush carpets fitted to the car. Only thing is, I realized that decent carpet is already pretty expensive, so I might not be saving much. If I do end up making my own I'll share.
Otherwise, I started pulling my dash trim so I could remove the radio but it's stuck to a mess of wiring so I gave up for tonight and I'll try again in the daytime.
Does anyone know how to troubleshoot/repair headunits? Mine has a really scratchy volume knob that ends up cutting out speakers sometimes when I turn it. Tape mechanism doesn't play or eject properly either and I'm hoping it just needs to be cleaned and fitted with a new belt.

I think it's finally time to get back on the Ranchero 351 Cleveland engine. I finished measuring and fitting all the bearings back in December. Going to order the heads and whatnot now.
Only variable I'm up against currently is headers. It's a 1973 ranchero. The stock manifolds are cracked. I've been looking at some block hugger headers, but I'm not exactly sure which ones too go with, finding them from several different suppliers.
Does anyone have any experience with such a niche application like this? I'm more concerned with ease of fitment than performance. Don't want to have to modify the frame or anything if possible. It's a pretty tight fit.

That's not where the problem lies. It's when you make a 6 figure insurance claim that having the car and paperwork match in all respects becomes important. There's more than 2 VIN locations on the car and insurance companies are well aware of VIN swapping so they'll check the hidden locations if the car is still available.

Boomer-sama, share your wisdom on Lockheed brakes.
Wrestling the shoes in place is a bitch and a half. With regular drum brakes I usually have the brake surfaces facing me and kinda flip them in place with the springs and everything in place, like opening a book.
This shit on the other hand due to the pivot bolts can't be done like that.
Is there some trick to this or do I just have to hit the gym?

Also I have no idea about adjusting these things.
Or rather I have a vague idea, you use the eccentric washers/bolts at the bottom to raise/lower the shoes and then use a 2nd cam higher up to spread out the top part of the shoes till it barely drags from upper and lower corners.
Or am I missing something here?
goddamn. steering box is finally on its way back.
while i was fixing the window regulators (greasing the main pivot point of the big gear thing makes them move surprisingly well) I was contemplating installing central locking while I had the door cards off but decided against it, considering the state of the body in general.
At least got to finally use that butyl tape I bought back in 2021. Pretty fat rope/tape; you can stretch it out to 3-4 times its length and it's still plenty useable. The stuff is very forgiving to use in that even though I got a decent amount of dirt and shit on it, it was still very sticky and tacky. Got some 100 micron builder's plastic for pretty cheap and it worked out really well. The only problem would be trying to get it all off, the tape is really sticky and it'd definitely be very annoying to remove if you ever have to do some servicing for whatever reason.

Quick search (for '39 style Ford brakes):
The correct adjustment with new shoes is to adjust the anchor cams by starting out with the dots facing each other and the adjustment cams (upper bolts) at a minimum. Have someone apply pressure to the brake pedal and hold it. Using a small wrench, turn the dot on the rear anchor down until you feel the brake shoe touch the drum. Repeat the operation for the front shoe. Usually it takes very little movement to get the anchor set correctly.
After you have adjusted the anchor cams, you can adjust the shoes with the upper bolts for minimum clearance to the drum. This is the adjustment that you will do every few thousand miles as the shoes wear.

thinking about it, if you'd ever need to pull off the vapour barrier i think the best way would be to use a box cutter to slice through the tape as you pull the plastic away from the door. I found that working a box cutter through the tape like a see-saw was the only way to separate it from the roll without making a gigantic mess.

Does anyone know what the part number is, or where to find the lens for this interior light found on the front doors of a (1985, probably other model years) Mercury Grand Marquis?
Rockauto has two styles of dome light lenses, one of which almost looks like it could fit here, but upon closer inspection of the images, it doesn't seem like the right part.

there is absolutely no part number on this, I looked on every surface, unless the part number was on one of the plastic tabs that broke off.
There is a number stamped on one of the remaining tabs, but it's literally just a "2", that's it. That's the only symbol of any kind on the piece
after cleaning and then using some compound on the front face, it looks like new except for the broken off tabs. If I can't easily find a replacement, I'll figure out how to make my own tabs and epoxy or plastic weld them back on to the lens.

I seriously question if that’s a generic Ford dome light that they used on the door.
Looking up “1985 ford door armrest light cover” got me the dome light cover and I’m really curious if it’s the same part. I know you have a Mercury but that’s really just a nicer Ford (in a good way).

Where did you look that up? ebay?
Rockauto does actually show two types of dome light lenses for the vehicle, one of which fits in the actual dome light, and another that won't.
The one that won't fit the actual dome light is a Dorman part #74973, and it actually does look pretty close to the armrest light cover, but if you look closer you'll realize it's not the same. I thought at first it might have been the right part but you can see it's got a rectangular shape and the base of it is flat with a sort of pyramid shape to it. The actual armrest area lens doesn't lay flat like that.

Paint is easy to fix by yourself so watch youtube vids. You can’t make it any worse unless you really try hard to fail.
Landau top:
https://www.topsonline.com/category/Landau-Vinyl-Tops/Ford/Ford-LTD-LTD-Crown-Victoria-LTD-II-1967-thru-1991/1983-thru-1991-Ford-LTD-Crown-Victoria
I’m more concerned about any rust underneath that top though. I’ve had good luck with the gel rust converter in a spray bottle. It’s not magic though and takes time to work. Or just paint that section and not have a landau top. I’ve seen that too.
Those wheels are restorable but the turbine spokes are annoying to clean. Like, really annoying. I have 70s era turbines on my Datsun and know.
You can get a set of American Racing Outlaw II wheels that look good. Check out CarID.com for wheels to give you ideas but those turbines are very oem spec looking and can be nice when cleaned. Also, simpletire.com has other tire brands that are more than acceptable for everyday driving.
If those turbine wheels are 15 inch, and if the stock tire size for them is 225/60r15, then tirerack.com has General Altimax and Uniroyal Tiger paw tires that are good for everyday and normal “I’m driving to work, school, or getting groceries”. I haven’t checked simpletire for any other choices. You do have other tire size choices depending on the size (14 vs 15 vs 16 inch) wheels.
Just some thoughts. I’m pretty sure that you’re on a budget so don’t go crazy with all this info. Get it safely drivable first. It’s no good to have a non running project car rotting on your lawn or something.
And drain/fill that AOD transmission cuz that’s really important. You can even replace the external transmission filter (Ford used those on many models) and add a transmission cooler.

I've painted the bumper on another car in metallic silver using rattle cans. It came out acceptable, and a couple years later I am unfortunately seeing a tiny bit of cracking on the paint. But other than that I feel confident I could do an acceptable job using rattle cans, or perhaps a cheap paint sprayer and compressor.
The car is mostly free of rust, but there is some on the trunk lid that's gotten pretty bad. I am considering welding it, but I think more likely I'll use a steel-to-steel epoxy and a steel sheet patch there. When I have more time and money, I can always cut out the section and weld it, but I think using epoxy in a smart way will work just fine.
I love landau tops. I've scraped away most of the old one which was in no condition to be restored. Once I get everything off the plan is to do some minor bodywork and fix rust, primer, and paint with a rattle can just to protect it before I put on a new vinyl top.
I'm too broke for wheels, I wanna spend my money judiciously here. How would you restore the OEM wheels? wire brush?
>Get it safely drivable first.
luckily for me, it already is. I've done some trips around town, and had some tire issues fixed. It passed smog as well, runs mostly fine, brakes work fine, etc.
It's mostly the exterior and interior that needs a lot of work. I'm going to keep it the same color which will allow me to respray the car without taking everything off of it and have it still look acceptable.
One day when I have the kind of money that makes other people buy new cars, I'll just spend a few thousand on having it properly repainted, maybe in black, if at that time I am not satisfied with however I've already painted it.
>>28615453
thank you anon, I'm still poor at the moment so I'm doing the best I can. When I get a job that pays more I'll be able to do more.

>I'm too broke for wheels, I wanna spend my money judiciously here.
I'm broke too so I totally understand. I was just dreaming if I had the money to restore something like that Mercury.
>How would you restore the OEM wheels?
I've had luck with oven cleaner that I had under a kitchen sink (let it sit for a while in the blazing sunlight on a wheel to help break down the brake dust), some 1000 to 2000 grit sandpaper, green scouring pads, dawn dish soap (under a different sink) - I had this stuff already and didn't have to spend any moolah on it. My wheels look better but still look like shit to me. Kids seem to think that they look great though and older guys love seeing the vintage wheels (and car).
I'm pretty sure your wheels are just metal and not painted (otherwise the oven cleaner and everything else will eat the clear coat) so this would work. It will be time consuming though and you will get tired.
Option B (if you have some cash):
Any sort of "iron remover" such as IronX or Adam's Iron Remover or Meguiar's Ultimate Iron Remover, etc. will REALLY help to get those brake dust particles off from the wheels but those will cost you some cash.
>I am considering welding it, but I think more likely I'll use a steel-to-steel epoxy and a steel sheet patch there.
I've heard that Bondo Metal Reinforced Filler works great for when you can't afford any welding but it requires sanding and then painting. I really need to knock out some rust from the rear hatch of my car and use this too. Aside from that, I know that it sounds stupid, but ChrisFix on YouTube has a good video or two on fixing rust on a budget to give you some ideas.
