How much additional performance on the top end can I expect from the current crop of 450 twins over the KLR/DR/xr650l? As in, how much more acceleration can I expect in 4th/5th over 80mph from the 450s?

I'm less interested in the differences between the engines within the same class than I am between a smaller displacement twin compared to the thumpers. If dropping a gear at 80mph and wringing out the throttle doesn't let me get around a semi significantly quicker than the singles, then the extra weight for the small twins isn't worth it, and I'll have to suck it up and look at a mid-size twin instead.

looking at dual sports. mostly offroad for trails. i don't want to do much street riding. maybe around town at most or on backroads.

there's a 2022 klx 230s 300 miles for $3000
a 2020 klx 300 with 2k miles for $3600

there's also a lot of DRZs for $3800-$4300 with like 7k-14k miles. none older than 10 years.

i think pulling the trigger on the klx 230s is probably not a bad call. i feel like if i'd go up to the klx 300, i might as well go a little further and do a DRZ. is it going to be annoying dealing with the carb? is it that big of a difference going from a 230 to a 400?

i don't have to pull the trigger on any of these but i don't really know how to tell when i see something good.

If you can fit on the DRZ (they are tall bikes) those are the gold standards for Dual Sports

Otherwise, that KLX-300 will serve you very well. The KLX230 is not a bad platform but trust me, you will feel the lack of those 70 ccs on the road.

>is it going to be annoying dealing with the carb? is it that big of a difference going from a 230 to a 400?
Depends on where you live and who you are. I like Carbed bikes. They're easy to service and depending on how cold t is in the morning where you live and how high above sea level you live, the difference is negligible. If you're going to be doing + or - 3000 ft a day, maybe a carbed bike isn't the best idea but if you're just going to be putting around in the woods, then you can't go wrong with one. They're dead simple to work on.

Better thing to consider rather than carbed is the fact DRZ is 5 speed and KLX, both of them, is 6 speed. Think about how much highway riding you'll be doing because you can really feel the lack of a sixth gear on the DRZ on the highway.

i'm 28 and i haven't ridden a dirt bike since i was probably 14-15. i used to have 125 yamaha 2 stroke.

>If you can fit on the DRZ
i'm 5'10". i've not seen one in person but yeah that is a thing that i see people talking about.

>They're easy to service
yeah I figure that once you get over the learning curve, it's a simpler thing to comprehend compared to a FI.

>highway riding
hopefully none, honestly. i think i'd want a different bike if i was going to go that route. I've got a truck so it's not a huge deal to load the bike up and take it somewhere.

i guess what i'm really asking is how much weight should i put on the price of the thing? i wish i had someone in real life i could ask about this and go "should i buy this thing or that thing".

There's a 2017 DRZ400 SM with an extra set of offroad tires. 4000$. Looks great and the guy used it to commute. 15000 miles. Is that too much? i dunno.

it's hard for me to assess the value of this stuff.
is it a "good deal" to go for the 230 even though it's a weaker bike, but a thousand bucks cheaper? I mean i haven't been on a bike in nearly 15 years. in my mind, i could probably sell the 230s right back on facebook and probably lose nothing for what it costs. that's my mindset at least.

it also feels safer because it's brand new. it can't be fucked up. whereas i don't actually know if some guy who put 10k miles on a DRZ mistreated it nor really how i'd tell.

You're getting a way stronger start with better fundamentals than I have. You're probably better than I am on a dirtbike.

>i'm 5'10". i've not seen one in person but yeah that is a thing that i see people talking about.
If you're 6' it's the perfect bike. If you're a couple inches short here or there it's still doable it's just don't expect to flat-foot it. I'm a few inches shorter and I can one-foot a DRZ on the ball of my foot.

>hopefully none, honestly. i think i'd want a different bike if i was going to go that route. I've got a truck so it's not a huge deal to load the bike up and take it somewhere.
Oh you'll probably love the DRZ. Honestly I would think you may like any of the bikes.

>i guess what i'm really asking is how much weight should i put on the price of the thing? i wish i had someone in real life i could ask about this and go "should i buy this thing or that thing".
Any Dual Sport around ~3K in this economy is a reasonable deal. You'll see people brag about getting them for 2K or 1K but it really depends on where you live. I live in the more temperate part of the US, so dual sportin' happens all year around. In the winter in some places north of here, you can easily snap up almost any Dual Sport you want in Winter when people are cleaning out their garages.

>is it a "good deal" to go for the 230 even though it's a weaker bike, but a thousand bucks cheaper?
If you don't expect to do much highway riding, then it may not matter too much. It's 17 hp vs 31 for the 400 and they're within 50 lbs curb weight of one another. So ask yourself, do you want to have twice the power? Do you trust yourself with twice the power and torque?

I can tell you that it doesn't matter too much if you're 15 years out of practice. You'll pick everything back up in a month or two of riding.

It depends on how long and how you intend to use it. If you're expecting something like the Dirt bikes of your youth, you're going to be disappointed. The 230 doesn't have the torque that you may be expecting.

>There's a 2017 DRZ400 SM with an extra set of offroad tires. 4000$. Looks great and the guy used it to commute. 15000 miles. Is that too much? i dunno.

The great thing about the DRZ is that it never dies. It's pretty bulletproof so 10K miles on a DRZ and 2K miles are similar to the engine.

It seems like you need to actually call these people and visit them, ask to see the bike, and make a decision based on the condition of the bike instead of seeing pictures.
>15000 miles. Is that too much?
I've seen DRZ400SMs with 50K miles that still sound like new.
Anonymous No.28692959 [Report] >>28692981

I guess my point to all of this being: if you're going to really stick around the idea of riding you may find the 230 lacking because I know what's going to happen: You're going to tell yourself that you're only doing off-road but then eventually you're going to realize that road riding is fun and you will want to do it between trails. I know because I went through the same thing when I got my XT250: I'm only getting this for trails. I'm not interested in the road. Eight years later and my XT has probably seen more road time than trail time because I just love riding it so much.

If you want an excellent compromise between the 230 and the 400, again, consider the KLX-300.

I think that's reasonable. i don't know if I'd actually go to tracks, but i do miss jumping bikes and it seems like there's no shot i'd be doing any of that with a 230. i mean, a drz isn't meant for that either, but there is some more meat to it.

>It seems like you need to actually call these people and visit them, ask to see the bike, and make a decision based on the condition of the bike instead of seeing pictures.
i think you're right.

>if you're going to really stick around the idea of riding you may find the 230 lacking
i think you might be right about this too. it's probably better to set myself up with something with some headroom rather than having to sell a bike when i reach the limits and buy the thing i should have gotten in the first place.

thanks for the input. i appreciate it. before this i was really discounting the "higher miles" of the drz as being totally clapped out and worthless, but yeah reading about it it does look like you can run these things forever.

We're heading into winter, prime bike buying time. Can't ride so sales/interest is down, 2026 models are filtering in, and stock all the way from 2024 continues to fester. Instead of searching FB marketplace for a beat to shit bike to ride for one season, I'm in a place where I can actually buy something new.
What recommendations do you have for someone buying a bike at a stealership for the first time to maximize savings?
I have 6 powersport dealers in my area. All of them have one of the bikes I want, a mid-size ADV (Yamaha Tenere 700/Honda Transalp/Suzuki V-Strom 800). I'm not too picky, just want one of them to be an all rounder as my grandpa's 2003 Road Glide is giving me trouble and my old DR-650 needs a rest.

Go to Cycletrader and try to find dealerships that advertise "NO DEALER FEES".
do NOT give $1600 in tip to a dealer just for the privilege of existing. Even if you have to drive a little ways, it's worth it in the end because every single dealer tries to fuck you with hidden fees unless you live somewhere like Europe where that's illegal.

That may be just about it.

sorry to hear that anon

in seriousness, if you don't care about off-roading, and you don't care about doing any more than the speed limit. All it will do is get you to the max speed faster if all you're doing is road biking.

If you're looking to get into cruising in what is effectively a cockpit down the highway, that is where larger engines would accommodate you. We have harley guys in the states who have never been on anything less than 1000ccs for that reason alone

Overtaking retarded drivers in the hills becomes a lot easier and safer to do once you get decent power. The only downside is that a bigger engine means a heavier bike, which means less nimble around the tighter twisties. At the end of the day it's entirely down to personal preference and what kind of riding you do.

Aka do you want to get all you can do in first gear regardless of a sneed limit?
That, sounds bigger, and goes fasfer more often than not
Otherwise there are slightly larger engines bored out of your single cylinder youre currently used to and they are more torque and off roader

What kinda bike you gonna get if you upgrayde?
Id go dual sport or harley under your australian circunstances, both air cooled so you can break down and suffer the blistering sun of 45C and wither and eventually died

Fucking stalled at the lights just as the engine caught up to the clutch so like 10mph.
Restarted it, flustered and accidentally semi-launched it, chirping the rear and lifting the front.
Christ I was so embarrassed, I haven't stalled a bike in YEARS, not even in goddamn trail rides.
I couldn't stop and talk to everyone to tell them 'No! This never happens, I'm not a noob! Please, look into this lens!".

The straight line winds in Kansas can make life absolutely miserable on two-wheels, even on a big tourer. Sometimes the wind blows so hard that riding perpendicular to it requires leaning into it, and there's a sudden drop in pressure that can send you into the next lane or the shoulder when the highway briefly dips down into a cut. This is considered normal out on the prairie for most of the year.
