Anyone here suddenly get horribly ill while on an outting? Green text time from my experience.

I got noro on a thru hike. Fine one minute that shitting and puking the next, nothing too concerning but it was a three mile walk to a trailhead, and I am extremely grateful I passed nobody in a touristy area while doing it because I was spraying shit like a garden hose every half mile.

I've got IBS or something similar (currently under investigation), meaning that I'll randomly almost shit my pants if I can't get on a toilet within seconds of noticing it coming up.
The only way to have a peaceful /out/ing is to not eat past noon on the day before and before afternoon on the day itself. Even then it's a gamble because I still often shit water and blood in the morning and into noon on an empty stomach.
I always bring TP, rubber gloves, hand sanitizer and a sealable bag with me to be prepared if it happens.

Picrel is me trying to find a spot to shit bloody diarrhea at 2000m altitude under extreme pressure.

Sounds to me like you get what you pay for. I haven't had a problem with my insurance, personally. Yeah, it sucks that insurance is expensive, yes the system enables them to charge so much, I wasjust saying the disparity between the US and Europe isn't nearly as people make it out to be. Europeans just seem to be given less of an option when it comes to paying for insurance

Yeah exactly my thoughts. A lot of people here choose to go without insurance or get bad insurance and then act surprised when they end up with a massive emergency medical bill. If you pay from your employer the insurance even comes out from your pre-tax income so it ends up being a little cheaper. However, I don't think people really think about it much they would just rather save the expense and not have it at all

one of my first times backpacking I pushed myself too hard in the heat and got heat exhaustion. nothing too serious, just dizzy, headache, no appetite, nausea, fatigue. slept like a rock and felt better next day. I was pacing myself like it was a day hike and wasn't used to carrying a loaded pack. fuck the heat tho

I have IBS and our symptoms are exactly the same. Except the bloody part, but I've had my moments. I basically have about a couple minutes to find a toilet from the first moment I feel heavy down there. Usually happens soon after the first meal of the day and then I can expect a couple more urgent movements not long after. If I make it to the afternoon, I'm safe. It sucks, friend. Could be worse though. Could be Chrohns.

I have used some fucking heinous toilets and shit my pants a couple times since diagnosis in 2018. I have shit where some people refuse to even piss.

It is treatable. With management you should achieve remission, and the disease comes in flares and remission cycles. If it's UC. Could be something else. Good luck anon.

You say it comes in flares (something I already noticed). How long are your cycles and can't you time your hikes accordingly? Also, do you medicate?

Yeah. I have had it since 2018 and it's like a roller coaster. I believe mine is considered mild, I've never been to the ER for it or any symptoms of it, but my "breakout flare" did cause us to call my gf's insurance's on call nurse to get advice at like 2am because I just could not stop shitting.

I say I have had it since 18 but that's when we just knew what it was. I had various symptoms, now that I think back, my whole life really, with low severity.

Cycles are unpredictable but I seem to get better, more or less in summer, and worse in winter. I have a confirmed vitamin D deficiency and there is some sort of link between UC and vitamin D, but from my reading it's a chicken and egg situation (Does UC cause it, or is UC caused by it/contributed by it, we don't know).

I am currently working on getting on a biologic called Entyvio. From what I know, it's one of the best drugs available for this as far as side effects to efficacy ratio goes. My insurance will not pay for it so I have spent literally all summer working with my doctor and Entyvio's patient assistance program because it is completely non viable to pay out of pocket for. I'm not on it yet.

I'm currently in what I would call 90% symptomatic remission. I haven't been cleared by my doc yet, but he will want to do a colonoscopy soon, but my day to day symptoms are low at the moment. I still get a lot of urgency and the location of the bathroom is always on my mind, but I can at least function. Go to parks, stores, etc.

I'm currently on what is by my understanding the "front line" drug, Mesalamine. It's the first option many people get. It's essentially a delayed release anti inflammatory. It works to curb my symptoms, that and a strong probiotic called VSL 3 which was recommended by my doctor. I also take a B12, Iron, Vitamin D, and Biotin, all but Vitamin D was at my own discretion, D was recommended by my PCP.

I have also been on a steroid (budosenide) taper to stab out bad flares when they happen. Let me tell you that shit is like magic for me. I'm not on it all the time, it's not good to, but I have done a taper a couple times to stab out flares and that shit usually takes care of it at least while it's on. This most recent has sort of lingered though, deciding to return as soon as I stopped. I have also tried hydrocortisone suppositories. Those were not fun. This has all been at the guidance of my doctor.

I believe there is also a huge mental component to this disease, a component I have yet to properly address and manage. I really need to get into therapy or something because the worst thing about this more than anything is that I'm finding myself making excuses to go out because I just feel slightly off and I'm afraid ill shit myself. I've become such a homebody in the last few years and it absolutely kills me because I love being outside. I got sick, had reason to stay inside, lost a lot of my aptitude for being outside, gained weight, and now I'm just like, depressed and never want to do anything.

Further, thinking about toilets or going to the bathroom makes me need to go. So does waiting. Like being made to wait in line without an easy way out. Also I have this, I'll say near compulsion that I have to go to the bathroom before I go into a meeting at work, before I leave the house, anything that might maybe take more than 5 minutes I feel compelled to go to the toilet.

As far as getting out, there are days I feel good and I can make day hikes. I could probably do overnight camping if I had a guaranteed place I could go shit in the woods if I wanted. It's just kind of a play it by ear thing. I'm far from where I want to be.

Get with your doctor, and if you haven't gotten counseling, do it now because the mental aspect is 100% the worst part of this disease. It sneaks up on you. You can live a normal life though some day, I am sure.

Oh, and coffee. Jesus Christ. It's different for everybody but be extremely careful with coffee.

I cannot have it regularly or it will keep a flare going indefinitely... I can maybe have it a couple times a week and drink it slowly...Really better to just cut it out entirely.

I replaced coffee with Scottish breakfast tea. Fairly strong and dark tea with a strong aroma and a decent kick. Not a 1:1 but close enough for regularity and it is much easier on my gut.

You'll have your own list of suspected triggers. Food, situations, drinks, etc....Figure it out. It isn't scientific but I like to think I'm helping.

You really are definitely helping, friend. Things started for me right around my 40th birthday this February. I’ve been reading up on the condition a little, and it seems the mental side of it plays a bigger role than I first thought. For now, I’m just trying to carry on with life as usual. The symptoms usually show up in the morning and are gone by around noon. If I skip food until then, they don’t seem to come back—so that still leaves me plenty of room for most activities.

But I honestly don’t know how severe my case is. My doc will tell me in a couple of days, I'm sure. I’ve had days where I basically had to sit right back down the moment I stood up from the pot. But that was definitely from eating the wrong things back then—it’s like having fructose and lactose intolerance rolled into one, after all.
As for coffee, I really hope that’s not an issue, haha. I mostly drink decaf, and I don’t notice any effect from it. Still, probably something worth keeping an eye on...

I will try to just continue on with my life and my activities. In fact, I'm now starting to go back to the gym multiple times per week. As long as all of this works, I will be fine and shape my life around the disease.

Yes. Day 3, could F sleep, delirious, nausea and shaking. Miles from civilisation. Day 4 the night was vomiting and bad stomach. Vomited 6 times or something. I think it was h pylori infection getting a stranglehold because I didn't eat for the first few days, not enough anyway. Been ill since, about 2-3 weeks and probably need antibiotics.
