it's so that when washing their hands, the first one that gets clean doesn't make the non-washed hand dirty and 'impure' via physical contact, so each hand gets a handle to hold. never mind that to wash hands properly means they have to touch so that the lye in soap is able to suds-up and spread correctly, and that it implies washing to these freaks is simply dunking their hands in water, or that to even get the water, you'd have to put a dirty hand on a faucet, meaning the sink itself is impure and thus defeats the whole ritual.
