>130 hours played in the past 2 weeks

I've realized vydia will never make me happy, the progress I make on vydia is just an illusion to fill the lack of progress in my real life. I might be the best at the vydia I play, so what? I'm still a loser in real life.

I have a Runescape addiction so I know how you feel. Not usually that many hours though. But I do play a lot. And the way I see it is the more effort you put into that world, the worse your IRL skills get.

>150 hours played in the past 2 weeks
I've realized for a long time that vydia will never make me happy, but neither will most things in life. I already failed at every other turn and there is no more hope for me. I will never be the best at any vydia I play, and the hobby will never be accepted without scorn. But it brings me more joy than any other acceptable activity I could engage, so I'll keep playing. Let others progress in their real life, I've found my frail peace, that's more than others have.

I only read the > part of your post
As a 36 year old failure who believes he has reached his "midlife crisis", I believe that the thousands of hours and hundreds of hours I have spent grinding and escaping in escapism Wow, osrs, lineage 2, that god damned ventrillo server and it splinters that haunt my dreams, it was all a waste of time because it is all an ephemeral waste of time that I used to escape from reality. If my father had told me to fuck off instead of just giving me a shrug and going "oh... i thought you played an instrument. Damn." I could have turned out better? You are ignoring reality. I seriously hope you are still a wee little zoomer who thinks that his suffering means anything? I hope so... Youth ends at 25, you will reach a hurtful break eventually. Please break free and seek salvation. The future is terrifying. Most people expect to live a minimum of 70 years.

I was literally about to recommend RuneScape instead. You need to get on that game and quest like there's no tomorrow. Just quest. Seriously, quest...GENUINELY quest. Dive into the game's lore. I've done so, but I don't have a computer that can run it anymore, so I'm confined to RuneScape novels instead.

i cured this by getting a job that works me too much so now i barely get to play video games but when i do play them theyre fun again

I look back at my 3k hours in Dead By Daylight with a sense of emptiness. I do not recall 99.99% of the matches I had in that game, and the friends I made there are all online and very far away.

the fuck you mean you dont have a computer that can run it? I played runescape on the school computers in the early 2000s flawlessly and they couldnt even load some websites properly. if you can post here you can play the game.

Try logging into RuneScape as it is now. Not OSRS, but RuneScape, the main game. Maybe if this were 2012 or something...

I got all of my 99s, including Farming, legitimately on RS3. I stayed up for 2 days straight burning magic logs and watching anime for 99 Firemaking (from I think 93) back in 2012. I can't walk away from something like that so easily.

kek, they're making sailing an actual skill now.

I burned magic logs...with the Ring of Fire and flame gloves in the Thieves Den. So many lines...and I did it legitimately.

The problem is that video games are too addictive, we don't treat it like the drug it is, it may not be powerful the way heroin is but its powerful in its own way when it becomes a years long habit and you have nothing else

>and you have nothing else

This is the problem, it's not that vidya is in itself addictive in any signiticant way, it's just that we have nothing else.

What difference would it make if you did music instead? It would be the exact same waste of time just more socially acceptable.

Music creation and performances are kinda group activities...
I admit that it is all up to how you engage in a medium. I got invited to a LAN party(wcIII and all) but I said no I stayed home to play Pokemon Ruby. I cleared both games and got my Diploma in one. My mother got mad when I implied I wanted to go... Moving my a735w could have broken it. My poor PC.

>video games are a drug
Looking around the so-called "real world," where we have sociopaths, serial killers, actual drug dealers/abusers, etc...I think I'll take a fictional one instead.
>but that's escapism
So is sportsball and alcoholism, but it's 'socially acceptable' when people get violently drunk and throw a TV out a window or something because their favorite team didn't win "the big game" or whatever. I can play video games and still get behind the wheel without the risk of running someone over in real life. Unless of course, I choose to, but I can't play video games in prison. At most, I'll probably just rage-quit and throw my controller across the room...only to pick it up later and try again.

It's still the same thing, wasting time away as a group vs. solo. Any activity that isn't in some way related to your survival (and by that I mean activities like resting, eating, hygiene, procuring resources to make sure you can perpetuate all of those continuously) is merely wasting away time until you have to go back to doing those survival-related activities. All non-essential activities are equivalent, some of them simply have better reputation than others.
