given that toby had the fever dream that inspired deltarune before undertale came out and that undertale was an experiment to see if he could make deltarune, i wouldn't be surprised if some of the areas in undertale end up retroactively being similar to deltarune

like we can't kill any enemies in this game without manipulating noelle into doing it for us and kris has no reason to believe the knight is an exception to that rule
it's also clear they aren't unwilling to hurt the knight, as their damage shoots up dramatically if susie and ralsei go down in the fight against them in chapter 3
it's not like anyone has explicitly said they're working towards the same end goal but a lot of kris and the knight's behavior toward each other is too strange to write off as unimportant or unsuspicious
