I personally don't like jpeg xl because of poor software decoding performance. The improved compression efficiency isn't worth the 10X slower decode speed. Webp will still be the go-to for a while for that reason alone for the next decade or so.

It's better but it uses 10X more decode resources this making webp "good enough". AVIF also faces a similar problem but it'd trying to remedy it through hardware acceleration.

Depends on the resolution but that's not what hardware acceleration is for. On the contrary hardware acceleration is BAD if you want the smallest file size possible.
The real purpose is better battery life and faster encode/decode speeds. If you look at decoding speeds you'll clearly see that without hardware acceleration AVIF is not a good replacement for JPG yet and only because decode speeds suck.

It's also less resource intensive to decode compared to AVIF and especially JPEG XL. The other 2 are obviously much better but raping all your CPU cores to decode an image is going to be a problem for anyone not using a modern PC.

>it's not like webp has great compatibility anyways and it's probably going to end up being a forgotten format nobody uses in X amount of years so not good to archive stuff either
Both modern Android/Windows/Mac natively support webp and older versions can be augmented to support it via third party image viewers/editors. Pretty much all web browsers support it too.
I really doubt it's going away soon because even though AVIF and JXL both outperform it (at least in lossy compression), Webp still has the advantage of fast software decode speeds which matters for all the low end electronics out there.
JPG might have become better but it still doesn't support transparency or animations so it's still practically an obsolete soviet-era technology.

Cool now you just have to convince everyone to get an iphone pro max deluxe elite so raped battery life will no longer be a concern with JXL.

Also the whole bling aspect of AVIF is hardware acceleration and its infinite battery life hack that comes with it. I mean you think AVIF decoding is fast now, wait until it's decoded at 9001 MP/s on mobile phones.

Shit man what are you using, a pentium 4 computer? Decoding webp is like exponentially less CPU intensive than AVIF and especially JXL.
