People take a lot of pride in their political identity. The only reason they "own modding" now is because bethesda modders can't be arsed to migrate and post their mods somewhere else. Other big modding communities don't even waste their time on Nexus.
If anything, Patreon is the corpo that actually "owns" modding, since they have indirect influence over every content creation community.
