>now we can start making real art
Art died when we went from 2D to 3D. Before 3D, the only way to create the illusion that you were in an interactive world was through art. After 3D, games ceased to be artistic and became technical. Your immersion is no longer caused by an artist, but by mathematical projections.
You could argue that 3D has advanced enough to give artists the ability to express themselves as well as 2D, and that's not entirely wrong, but we know that in practice this isn't happening, and 3D games with high-quality art are the exception.

Real 3D, at least initially, caused a huge impoverishment in the artistic aspect. All games started to look more like technical achievements than artistic creations. Even today, you could argue that 3D graphics are still an obstacle to artistic quality.
