I believe it is a wonderful plot device in exposing subhuman IQ individuals. Even when I played Star Ocean 3 at age 12 back in 04 and was hit with the twist, I could not imagine being mentally retarded enough to think:

It's the same thing all over again with E33. A higher reality existing outside the main one inexplicably invalidates the existence of the player engages with due to some arbitrary and manufactured definition of what is "real." In a fucking video game.
