I was at the park meditating because I had taken Toby out.
And I had this idea—imagine the protagonist has to choose between helping three little mice.
One of them grants wisdom, another wealth, and another fame.
And the points we earn can go to one or the other, but by doing this, we offend one of the other mice.
And so this could lead to finishing the game with wisdom, but being poor.
And in that case, I don't need to fight or kill anyone—the mechanics themselves symbolize the conflict.
The risk, as a consequence of failing a mechanic, doesn’t necessarily mean you get hit.
You just need a negative consequence on your score table.
But it doesn't have to mean getting hit by an enemy.

No, the issue with roguelites and arcade games, is that they're like giving you a hamburger or sandwich with just the slice of meat.
What gamers want is the rest of the hamburger, and just giving the meat, is not good enough.
Same for shmups or fighting games or RTS.
They are the slice of meat, but you need the veggies and also need the tomato, the chili and the bread and the cheese.
What gamers want is a hamburger, not just a basic sandwich.
