Will (You) be submitting to DD63?
Will your demo be ready?
What games are (You) looking forward to playtesting
>>528774135probably not I am trying to make it fun but I am already bored with it.
Is it more embarassing to make a porn game or fotm gambleslop "game"?
>>528774398maybe you should add some GAMEPLAY
>>528774502I am trying to make it the player is constantly forced to move forwards from threat of drowning from the falling water, similar to lava survival on really old minecraft alpha. but the novelty of that wears out quickly.
>>528774278>July 4thAre you really gonna be playing games on a Holiday? The 5th is fine, but definitely not that 4th.
>>528774701>July 4th>Holiday
>>528774456Is it embarassing for a tiger to hunt a deer? You provide a service, people will pay you for it. Simple as that.
>>528774456hollow knight/hades clone
its like admitting youre only capable of slop, but also that you think youre too good to be called slop
I will never understand people worrying about DD. Fake ass deadlines for no reason to present a pointless portion of your game to losers on 4chan who suck at game dev.
To me it has the same energy as the clips I see on instagram of people in vr chat freaking out in weird lounges crying about phantom pain and shit. Bunch of losers lmfao.
>>528774456>>528774664Might think about playing Velgress in UFO 50 for inspiration about a "climb up" game.
>>528775007damn thats craazy
i'm sticking to multiplayer games
>>528775007Well first, multiple games here have made over 100k. Some much more.
2nd, who gives a fuck what you think. We aren't your mom, we don't need your random thoughts.
>>528775007wtf is DD? Demo Days? I would never put my game anywhere near 4chan or those big announcement like PCGamer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pJO8CRkSnw
Mark is 100% right here, low production value is the biggest threat to your game. Most normies are sheep, they will not play any indie game unless their favorite strimer plays it. A game being 2D is enough to filter normies.
>>528775328Whoa 100k! That must be a lot of money to someone who's poor. Also why would my mom get my random thoughts she doesn't even live near me. I tell my random thoughts to my GF anon. Also, there's nothing random about my post it's on topic to what everyone is currently yapping about. Of course if you weren't an autistic zoomer with no reading comprehension you'd understand that.
>>528775343>40 minute videoSpit it out in a sentence
if I make it I hope I don't get cancelled
>nodevs actively trying to make DD, something that has been here since the beginnings of this general, irrelevant for the past week>>528775007>>528775343geez i wonder who could be behind those posts
>>528776225Anon I've been against DD the entire time I've posted here and I'm not a nodev at all
>testing lighting to bake lights
I'm going to see a specialist today about my pain, please wish me luck anons. I really want things to change, I don't want to be a bitter man who can't work or do anything anymore.
>>528775864> Spit it out in a sentenceIf your game has "high" production value, the tone of the reception changes. But the reverse is more damaging. If your game has a low production value, a design decision like few checkpoints will be criticized as "lack of checkpoints". If your game has good production value, the same design decision of fewer checkpoints will be celebrated as "bold/challenging pushes player to improve himself".
>>528775007>I will never understand people worrying about DD. Fake ass deadlines for no reason to present a pointless portion of your game to losers on 4chan who suck at game dev.you sure love mentioning and talking about stuff you don't like

>>528776887You seem upset.

Kannadev where?
>>528687940>tomboyWhat kind of tomboy? Do you have any video game or anime character references I can use to get an understanding of her behavior and body language?
>>528776483Interesting, thanks anon. Seems to make sense that the more enjoyable it is to just be in the world (high production value) the more forgiving you are. I think this holds across other examples too. It's important to charm the player -- good mystery, or humor, or art, or characters, etc. -- right at the start of the game. It buys lots of good will with players. It's why good games can get away with being just a few hours as well sometimes.
>>528777312I'm not, just regular white.
I should be ready for demo day
>>528777238>Uses a lower case W in WhiteNice try, but your high Brahmin verbal IQ doesn't translate to the written word.
DD is sovl because every general that generates OC has some internal event about it. Getting rid of DD is getting rid of the sovl 4chan generals have, at this point just go to reddit and enjoy the endless barrage of stealth marketing posts
>>528778223You are fighting imaginary ghosts anon.
>>528778223Sorry to blow your mind, it's not that deep
>>528778475is that your testicle inside your pantsu?
>>528778291DD isn't soul, progress is.
>>528778665Nah it's my ankle, I wanted to be scandalous
>>528778668>progressNo one cares about this, it's not sovl. How many games have progressed and they're now forgotten? An endless amount
>>528778901Who cares if they're forgotten. Young people worry about the dumbest shit.
>>528779121If you're only making games to "post progress" then you're acting like a fucking AI
Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)
Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."
Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

>>528779360I make the game I want to play because it doesn't exist. Beyond that nothing else matters about anything. As far as 4chan goes and the initial discussion of this branch of replies starting here
>>528778291 DD means nothing when it comes to soul but being able to backup your replies to idiots here with progress showing you're not a nodev is. I don't care about anything as long as you're improving yourself and meeting goals. If you're stagnant, empty, or worrying about dumb shit like DD that's not soul it's pandering for attention because you're probably lonely and young.
Does anyone know how hard it is to get a Gamepass deal with Microsoft? I know it's selective but like.. HOW selective? Will only the top of the top indie games get it, or can a good looking game with 20,000 wishlists on Steam have a chance?
learning Zbrush, we'll see how soon I can actually get a real, workable, model working.
>>528780083Looks good so far
>>528766091>>528779769people like this probably write their reviews in mayo
Would a Western shooter be cooler with sci-fi and fantasy shit like werewolves?
Westerns are kino but the enemy variety would be pretty weak considering everyone uses guns and at best rides a horse
>>528778668Playable demos are the only real progress in game development. "Progress" as in posting staged screenshots for internet points does nothing to actually make real progress on the game.
>>528776483You just described halo effect
My game has a 99.8% hatred rate.
>>528781827That 0.2%?
Me.
>>528781537How exactly is one staging a screenshot? Also webms are the best progress. There's no reason to worry about letting other devs touch your pre alpha game lmao. By the time you hit alpha or beta you're gonna be doing EA or something else anyway and there will be a full time demo from then on. DD is pointless.
>>528782135This
>>528781537Games are meant to be played
>>528781537Funny that you mentioned it. I took some staged "screenshots" for pr purposes today.
Working with the actual game and making proper progress is pure bliss. Marketing and pr stuff devours me from the inside.

>>528785174that's why i said "readily available on the internet"
right now, with zero experience, you can make a flappy bird clone in 5 minutes with chatgpt and unity
15 years ago, it would have at least taken a couple hours, maybe a couple days
easier education = more games = lower value
i started a new project 5 minutes ago and im already considering dropping it

>>528785723>>528786564If you're making a 2d game, RPG Maker or Game Maker are unironically better options that have more successes in them then Unity or Unreal. Obviously check if your game can exist within the scope of RPG Maker if you decide to go that route though.

>>528789417Getting tired of seeing this bitch
I made 2-4k a month from making NSFW games for about 4 years. NSFW has a higher chance at success but I hated doing it. Boring, creative compromises in story writing because it all has to lead to NSFW, etc. Also hated making NSFW content. Got so burnt out that I quit. Tried getting into regular game dev, got bored of my games super fast. The whole game dev process is a huge pain, and is only fun if you are doing it for fun and not for money, but eventually you will get bored of your game. game development was really different back in the day. tamsoft are a game studio that released bargain bin slop called the simple series until one hit and spawned multiple sequels and a live action adaptation. this isn't really a viable strategy nowadays since development costs and standards have gone way up.

Such a cope. You learned how to fail, lol.
The real issue is trying to design a combat game that doesn't depend on conflict.
And that's like designing a physic system without collisions.
Most people and even storytelling will cringe at the idea of a story without conflict.
But there's something deeper inside of me that tells me that there's something beyond conflict and the requeriments of suffering, murder, villain, to carry a story.
There's already other things beyond violence like exploration, collaboration, charity IRL.
So why is hard to imagine a story without violence and murder?

>>528795053but I've realized that conflict is not required.
What humans actually crave is novelty.
Conflict creates change in the world and characters.
but conflict is not the only driver of change.
It's like claiming that killing others is the core motivation of humans.
In reality humans are motivated more by fixing things, or making pretty things, or love, or desire of learning, or desire to be accepted by a group, or gain recognition, or help others, more than we are motivated by killing others and a lust for power.
Conflict could be changed then to trying to help others and fixing things, instead of killing and destroying.
In fact, we could change technically the act of striking, into something positive.
Imagine by example, that a martial art strike could be turned into a positive act, like cleaning, which is full of physical motion, or dancing.
Imagine a 2D fighter mechanics but instead of fighting another human, your goal is to clean up dirt using the same mechanic as striking something.

What if the answer to my issues is that I was framing everything throught the lenses of 2D fighting games.
But in reality, the solution is quite easy.
Like conflict shouldn't be about conflict between two puppets fighting to the death, but more about the inner growth from child into adult, into a being that can help others with responsability.
A 2D combat can easily be replaced to be about construction and creation over destruction, by turning the act of punching and kicking an enemy, into the same action, punching and kicking, but to use a tool to get tokens that simbolize the act of creation of something.
Like how a carpenter uses his tools in a physical sense, using the same code that detects the collisiion of a 2D hitbox, but instead of being meaninful an act of violence, can be a methaphor for cleaning up dirt, sins, mental and emotional trauma or also the act of creation of things to help others.

>>528799313bro thought he cooked fr with ts
He's talking to himself again
unreal engine gives me everything i need. animations, free models, free tools etc. etc.
yet i hate working with that engine so much, i just can't do it.
e.g. there's one thing that annoys the crap out of me, and that is that the editor ui renders at realtime. (not the game viewport, i mean the ui). in unity it only updates on changes.
but then there's shit like the terrain editor which spams your vram until it's full and then the editor crashes. they fixed that issue in 5.6 (it's in the changelog), but only if you do not use the water tools. it basically says to not use the water tools or volumes or it'll crash again xD
so basically they tell you that the feature doesn't work, because it'll always crash your editor because you run out of vram. (scroll down the 5.6 release notes if you don't believe me)
then there's lumen, which is very noisy and on top of that it smears when you move the camera. which is unusable to me basically.
i have to admit, i can't name more issues than that because i've quit using i 2 years ago and only look into it by trying new versions, but i always have performance problems.
seriously if you'd give me all the free assets, metahumans and all that stuff, but for unity, i'd never ever touch unreal. also i have basically no scripting options in unreal, because blueprint is hell with version control. so it's either c++ (which i like, but for scripting i want faster iteration) or blueprint which i really hate.
also the filesystem is a hell to work with, just moving a folder makes your editor crash often times.
i just cannot enjoy working with the engine. also i really don't like high end pc's, with a low end pc you can enjoy games and dont have to worry about something breaking. your gpu is tanked? no problem, just buy a low-end one. also lower energy costs.
i just hate to make a game that only richfags can play. i want my games to be playable for people even if they use a gtx 1050 or so.
here's smoething i dont understand... you know how some roguelites have RNG seeds...?

sometimes randomness can be reproduced, thus the seed
>>528798646okay ;_; understandable, cant have someone cloning it right?
>>528799745It really depends on how your generating stuff.
Like if you just generated a seed of 1-100 at the beginning of the game then something like your enemy spawn could be as simple as
1-33 - Spawn t-rex
34-66 - spawn raptor
67-100 - spawn nothing
And this would be the same every time given the same seed
gamedev is in a state comparable to the use of horse carriages. people keep minmaxing and optimizing the shit out of their carriages, yet as we all see, the limits have been reached.
there will be nothing new in gaming until we advance from horse carriages to cars. which means something has to transform the gamedev process. i don't mean raytracing or better hardware. i mean new tools.
i think it's AI, but not in the way you think. the thing is, big companies have all the tools, they just don't want to share them. e.g. they could easily share a character creator and all the animations with you. e.g. sims 4 could share that.
if they would, indies could make really cool games from that. it's how blender revolutionized 3D modeling, because poor people can now make 3D models too. so more people can make games.
but what will AI (maybe) do? it will help open source devs to make AAA tools for free. and that will be the next big step.
at least it "could be", if ai really works out.
i mean we all know that AAA devs could make incredible games with their resources, but it's their resources, not ours. so we all depend on them to make actually good games.
and that was always the same when only the rich and powerful were able to make something.
Worked a bunch on my intro today by filling out placeholder dialogues (and the placeholder map on the past two days).
There are actually lots of new stuff to be made it's just that most devs don't have the creative spark.
Thankfully I do.

so does a game like slay the spire, with its seed, randomly generate everything at the start of the game before the player can "influence" it with their decisions

All of your "randomness" is deterministic based on that initial seed

two games are using seed 12345
player 1, attacks 3 times in a row. and rolls a hit, a miss, and a hit
player 2, attacks once, drinks a potion, and attacks again. first he hits (identical outcome), he drinks a potion (there is a roll here for how much it heals, lets say 4 health points), now the 3rd hit is no longer the same random number, and it misses

i find it interesting that you have suffered only minor losses from jumping to a new game but mado has suffered great losses from such a thing. i believe it has to do with the genre change. you stay in the same genre overall which your fanbase clearly likes, thus negating losses from switching to a new game. mado on the other hand lost the fanbase tied to his game, the new one is simply too different and has to find a whole new crowd but it seems to be on a downtrend so idk how many there are that like it compared to his last game. despite being against coom devving i find the performance behind you two quite interesting. also interesting how bit by bit you guys, at least the consistent ones ie you, moncurse, daent, and bedabot are overall trending up long term. mado on the other hand stuck finding a new base point after shifting games but overall up longterm. almost as if overall successes on /agdg/ shifted from normal games to coom games. i'm not encouraging this tho, i'd rather you all quit coomdevving ;_;
it's insane how much people gaslight themselves with all sorts of reasons and explanations instead of just admitting "i do not want to dev".
the real reason you are a nodev is because you don't enjoy doing it. i feel like that's hard to admit, when it's your dream. it's like wanting to date a girl because she's hot, but when you are with her you hate her. and then you try to make yourself love her, but it just doesn't work.
>>528801819I dunno why you'd use a seed in that specific case.
But if you wanted to, you could. There is nothing stopping you from coming up with a random function that generates hits or misses based on the initial seed and something concrete like an enemy ID or whatever.

I was at the park meditating because I had taken Toby out.
And I had this ideaโimagine the protagonist has to choose between helping three little mice.
One of them grants wisdom, another wealth, and another fame.
And the points we earn can go to one or the other, but by doing this, we offend one of the other mice.
And so this could lead to finishing the game with wisdom, but being poor.
And in that case, I don't need to fight or kill anyoneโthe mechanics themselves symbolize the conflict.
The risk, as a consequence of failing a mechanic, doesnโt necessarily mean you get hit.
You just need a negative consequence on your score table.
But it doesn't have to mean getting hit by an enemy.

>>528803612And what happens if by example, the game over and game victory isn't done to the player.
So, there's a game over and a victory, but not for the player, but for one of the mice.
So the conflict is not about killing the player, but simply each mice trying to win, and tricking the player into winning for him.
But at the same time, there's a game over, but is not the one for the player.
The player doesn't die nor has to kill.
It has simply to win enough tokens to declare one of the mice to be a victor.
But the conflict is born from the mice to each other, not to make the player fight and kill and survive.
But simply treat the player as a force of judgement to pick a side, and that side is more a moral reflection of ourselves, rather than mere a basic action to cause a collision in the engine.

is it normal to go to bed wiht a completely clear plan of everything but waking up with a completely empty head that doesn't refill with anything until its bedtime again
I mean, what if instead of being something negative, each attack pattern is similar to a shmup attack, but instead of being negative points, It simply increase the value of one of the 3 mice points, so the battle is over when one of the 3 mices reaches something like 100, instead of my HP points reaching 0.
That way, there's not damage, neither game over.
But there's still a game ending, and the game still follow most clasic shmup mechanics.
So in a sense, the game is more like an arcade tournament, until one of the mice wins.
But the leading mice bullets could become smaller and the losing ones could become bigger, as a way to increase dificulty.
