Both. Basically the only way we'll see widespread adoption is if people generate content in it and consoooom it. Such as taking an AV1 video or AVIF screenshot.m and then playing that back on their device.
We could just do all this through software but the poorfags are going to cry about it. Either encoding takes 10X longer than JPG/H264 or battery life will be dogshit.
I mean when you stop and think about it hardware acceleration is the beating heart and soul of the JPG zombie today. Or did you really think phone processors are capable of taking 50 megapixel JPG images in 0.1 seconds?
We already have crude $10,000 hardware accelerators for AVIF btw. All they have to do now is cram them into phones.

On desktop computers with at least 4 CPU cores it's a huge nothingburger but it does matter for anything that runs on a battery. Not necessarily because the CPU is weak but because it improves battery life. That's it really.

Somewhat agree with this but the REAL reason modern formats haven't gained any traction is because they take an infinitely longer time to encode compared to JPG so all the nerds doing the backend stuff would rather not deal with longer encode times so they use JPG and call it a day.
There does now exist hardware acceleration for AVIF but it costs $10,000 so shit IDK man.

Apparently this is a extremely controversial thing to bring up but Jpeg XL, AFAIK to date, does not have hardware acceleration. AVIF on the other hand does but truthfully it's not doing to good either because the "hardware acceleration" costs $10,000 in the form of an FPGA. Jpeg XL does seem better suited for photography but no hardware acceleration is like a death sentence for this thing.
I do hope this changes soon DOE.

It never got any hardware acceleration so it's like 100X slower to encode compared to JPG which does have hardware acceleration. AVIF aims to fix this oversight but as far as I know the only hardware acceleration it has like at all is through a $10,000 FGPA so it's not like there's any hurry to switch to AVIF right now.
Otherwise Webp is a pretty BLEH image format. Lossy isn't that great, lossless is good, and holy shit is this the perfect replacement for GIF since it can compress existing ones without any loss in quality.
