Its certainly better than the auxilia gambit which let's them shoot a pistol and then costs them all their melee attacks and automatically gives the enemy challenge advantage.

If inferno pistols were D2 I'd understand, you'd essentially just be gambling everything on the hope that your enemy fails his invulnerable save and dies instantly to D4.

But since inferno pistols are D1 you should only ever use the gambit if the enemy challenging is already badly injured (somehow) i guess it works as a finisher if your Legate gets his opponent down to 2 wounds but is absolutely going to die next round.
