to be fair in the 1980s and somewhat into the 1990s there were quite a few properties that really shouldn't have been adapted into children shows, just donkey kong isn't one of those.
hell Beetlejuice got a childrens show, a dark comedy movie about dying and the afterlife that was originally planned to have an undead middle eastern man wanting to rape lydia instead of what we got where he just wanted to marry her.
