It just upsets me that something like this is in a FANTASY GAME. If you closed your eyes and listened to the dialogue it, genuinely, sounds like a cutscene from Life is Strange or some other modern game. It is like they're in California and some woman is telling her immigrant mother that she is non-binary.
They make zero effort to actually dress this up as fantasy. They don't use some exotic, foreign term in a different language for "non-binary." They don't describe it as a feeling. They just express it in modern nu-speak that only a small percentage of the world population understands.
Video game writing has become terrible. I was recently replaying Blood Omen and Soul Reaver and the difference in writing and dialogue is so astounding that I have difficulty putting it into words. What happened to dialogue? Why is it all so shit? I cannot remember the last game that had good dialogue. Even a game like Expedition 33 that I thought had good overall writing still had dialogue that felt like it was spoken by modern day people in a weird french fantasy setting. Disco Elysium is written well but the dialogue is 90% irony and jokes. The Xenoblade Chronicles series has serious themes but the characters still talk like children.
Something happened to video game writers. They just became incapable of writing fantasy characters. Everyone sounds the same. You can take a character from one game and stick them in any other and they sound like they fit. I just don't get it.
