The open world also doesn't detract anything though.
The devs clearly designed the game to have inter connected races first, then after having to design a world around those portions decided to let players freely explore the game world.
I fully disagree about them feeling samey. There are tons of different roads and paths with neat features or gimmicks to them.
Like DK spaceport ---> Peach Stadium uses the mega boats and mega copters.
Though I will agree doing the intermission then 3 laps would be nice. But they are not long at all, they go by very fast.
