There was forums and IRC channels doing their own thing, now its all homogenised "discord" or "subreddits" which have to comply with the site wide """rules""". You can't post anything outside the accepted thoughts there. In a way the chans are the only thing left really, aside from a few forums here and there with dwinlding numbers because there isn't any way for new people to find the forums so they eventually just die off.
