The original Elio sounded like a vanity project by a faggot director who became blind to the realities of social norms and values outside of himself and the idyllic multicultural genderspazzed San Francisco realm he prances around in.
Truth is, these are huge and grotesquely expensive endeavours, and creating ridiculously niche faggot propaganda isn't going to have wide-market appeal.
This defanged and defaggoted Elio on the other hand, has a different issue wherein this is absolutely zero hook. Nothing conceptually that immediately compels people, upon seeing the poster, or the advert, or the McDonalds Toys. All it suggests is another gay purply vaguely sci-fi experience like Light Year, and Strange World, and whatever, that they're all now trained to avoid.
Even Turning Red, which featured the same Tumblry burger-king-kids-club diversity managed to easily sell the puberty metaphor aspect to girls.
Elio is just a colossal fuck-up in market awareness and budgeting from the get-go.
You can tell this had to have been greenlit in the rarefied post-Obama progressive tide of noncery that proliferated in the late 2010's, when those mega gaylords thought they were absolutely unstoppable
