It's perfectly plausible that Kris and Dess didn't have a perfect relationship, that in fact Dess was sort of toxic, enabling, physically hit Kris, encouraged Kris' bad behaviors and she ultimately suffered the consequences of her careless adrenaline junkie punk adventuring and made Kris suffered because of her choices as much as Kris failed to help her
In a way Kris and Susie are building a new healthier attempt at having a tomboy bff
