You are not having a epiphany or pointing out contradictions in the series writing.
This is very much an intended interpretation of the character.
I can understand why that's confusing because we went from just fans glazing him over the years to several spinoffs that seem to promote the same fan bias, but never forget what a broken, pathetic man he is at the end of CCA. Tomino did this on purpose.

It literally makes less sense e if you've seen ZZ though (and I'm saying this as a knock on Unicorn, not ZZ).

How the fuck was clearing this up not a priority in side material?
