As someone who's worked in a library with a public fax machine, I can assure that faxing is still a thing in America.
It's dogshit, but when your options for sending files to the government are only faxing and snail mail, the last thing people want to do is try to find stamps.

I think the Smash clone developers approach it incorrectly. Make something for the general audience that's fun and you'll have a percentage fanbase who gets gungho about the game and want to learn everything about it. If it's Player versus Player, they'll compete with each other and a competitive league will be born. Of course the gameplay has to be deep enough to keep people playing but it has to be easy enough and appealing for the general populace to get into.
I agree with what you're saying; targeting competitive Smash Bros players solely is not a sustainable market.
