Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) in Melbourne launched a study of the unknown effects of puberty blockers on the brain only last year, having offered these drugs as a routine intervention for well over a decade. This is a medication used off-label to suppress natural sex hormones and normally timed puberty.
The most difficult question is whether puberty blockers do indeed provide valuable time for children and young people to consider their options, OR whether they effectively ‘lock in’ children and young people to a treatment pathway which culminates in progression to feminising/ masculinising hormones by impeding the usual process of sexual orientation and gender identity development.
Many medical organizations around the world, including the Australian College of Physicians, the Royal College of General Practitioners in the United Kingdom, and the Swedish National Council for Medical Ethics have characterized these interventions in children as experimental and dangerous. World renowned Swedish psychiatrist Dr. Christopher Gillberg has said that pediatric transition is “possibly one of the greatest scandals in medical history” and called for “an immediate moratorium on the use of puberty blocker drugs because of their unknown long-term effects.”
