What the internet told me:
>Combat is largely optional
>You can talk your way out of most encounters
Reality:
>Mandatory combat sections as soon as you hit the catacombs. Long stretches of fighting bats, rats and bandits.
>Full on bossfight zone in Ravel's maze juggling monsters and Ravel's attacks
>The entirety of Curst is allegedly outsourced and is mostly rooms and rooms of fighting guards in the prison and also an all-out warzone with demons and wizards.

I'm more than familiar with cRPGs and other Infinity Engine games but I still found the combat in this game to be absolutely miserable. Litany of Curses, good tattoos, grabbing Dak'kon ASAP and converting TNO to a mage will carry you early on, but after Ravel it really does spike in difficulty and tedium. It's like you're suddenly playing a Baldurs Gate scenario but its just nowhere near as enjoyable for reasons I can't put my finger on. Real time with pause was kind of a mistake for all of these games, honestly. At least the spell animations are cool, they were very clearly inspired by FF7 summons.
