I feel like they had all the pieces they needed to make this a compelling conflict, Athlete down on his luck because his life didn't turn out the way he thought it would and the worst day of his life just so happened to be the Party member's best day.

But then they make him so horrendously over the top and memeable that you just can't take it seriously.
