I mean Sonic exists because the CEO of Sega of Japan wanted a mascot to sell Genesis/Mega Drive units. Mario exists because Miyamoto wanted a character he could use in any context, which is why he was shoved in all those NES sports games. Sometimes things just exist for marketing purposes and that's fine.
