The Horus Heresy novel series was honestly the beginning of the end for 40k. It's full of some of the most embarrassing shit I've ever seen put to paper.

10 hours of unskippable walk-and-talk cutscenes for a story that feels like it was written by corporate ai. The ONLY interesting element is them canonizing the ancient sci-fi empire from the old art book.
Then once you get passed that to the "real" game in high rank, there's nothing. Not even one actual Elder dragon (Gore is the best they could do).
And the game runs like shit and they've somehow made it worse through patches.
