I think they are played by a loud minority most of the time.
I don't mind 'em. I think they are neat since it is hard for someone to play as one on a psychological level.
Us humans do not like being seen as "lesser" in many aspects, height being one of the simpler ones, and the very feature of the dwarf being... well short has this effect on most people that causes them to feel inferior towards other players whom are of the taller races.

Based if players treat them with respect and not just short kings with "muh grudges." What separates them from redditors is an appreciation in the things like they're unwavering loyalty and bravery, utter dedication to building and crafting, and they're deep respect for elders and kin. These are the usual things dwarfs have in fantasy settings but you don't see people appreciate them enough cause they're extremes of human traits. They're not ethereal or otherworldly like Elves, but it makes the dwarfs more aspirational. I reckon also that a lot of people that aren't close to their family and community just don't understand dwarf society because it's usually just an extreme collectivist society where a dwarf will know his place in his Hold and has it drilled to respect his elders and those who came before. To be honest, I think the surge of dwarf fans in recent years comes from people who long for that kind of kinship. A lot of fans in the west likely don't have closely tight knit families, and are probably not in a job/trade where they know their shit to a T and can make something beautiful. I still remember how in the LoTR books, Gimli was such a poetic and deep admirer of all things beautiful, but still saw things differently from Legolas. Legolas didn't understand the appeal of the crystal caves in Helm's Deep the same way Gimli did. Furthermore, in regards to a lot modern western fans, I'm sure a lot of them are now preferring characters that are sincere in what they say, in contrast to all of the Marvel movie quips we get in stories. Dwarfs are known for being blunt, but absolutely meaning what they say. Gimli himself couldn't help but laud Galadriel's beauty despite the differences in their race. To which she saw utter sincerity from him and gave him three strands of her hair (when he only requested one).

Or how many are lonely today because they have no friends or family they have close ties to. People see that, and you see dwarfs and they're the epitome of good old traditions. Just like the dwarfs, the traditions they once admired are dying or have been long gone. But as long as they stand, they'll keep going and try to bring it back to the good old days. As long as there is one son of Durin or Grungni, they won't ever kneel.

Dwarves (they weren't even called Dwemer yet) were mentioned a grand total of twice in the entirety of Arena and they were only ever stated to have been driven out of a hold by a dragon (an obvious LOTR reference).

Dwarves in fantasy got mostly taken over the wholesome quirk chungus crowd in a variety of different universes where they appear.

The trend in gaming has been that in any situation where you can pick your race, people will pick the sexy elf/human options or whatever is closest. Dwarves are short so they don't get the Sex Appeal Boost.

So for the most part you'll hear people say dwarves are awesome but very rarely is anyone other than a chud or reddit bacon beer drinker actually playing one.

I like the dwarf in Dragon's Crown. At first glance he's a typical dwarf but then he's got all these really cool wrestling moves. That's not what I really like about him, though. Some of his skill tree pictures as well as certain frames of his animations seem to indicate a darkness or rage inside of him, but in a more interesting way than the typical berserker type dwarf. Sometimes all you can see of his face is a giant mouth with two huge rows of blunt but scary looking teeth. It's almost like there's an animal inside him. Maybe I'm just reading too much into small details but it's the impression I always got.
