A woman threatened to kill herself while on the phone to me at my job working for a car insurance company. This was years ago and I can't remember the context of her threat. Anyway the procedure was that we had to call police and notify them that this customer had threatened to end their own life and ask the police to perform a wellness check (bear in mind we have the customer's full address and contact information). The whole thing was just a pain.

For the record, anyone who works in a call centre categorises suicide-threateners alongside people who get angry and yell, because that's all it is: hysterics and histrionics.

However, the people who did get to me on calls were women who became tearful and cried. These were the peope who you could tell were actually affected by something, be it the car accident or their car being written off or a liability decision going against them or them having to return the hire car or whatever. Suddenly they'd become quiet, their voice would break and you could tell whatever was happening was one straw too many in their life at that moment and it would come out as tears. Not crocodile tears either, real tears. Those were by far the hardest calls to experience and I'd end up moving heaven and earth bending rules to cut these people a break.
