It's not that Toby is a hack, it's that there's no new video games with a good story or fantasy world. Hardly any are even trying. Lots of games had drama, story, and fantasy in the past. Toby is just a fan boy of it all, more so towards the Mother/Earthbound series. He's mimicking it as an amateur, but an amateur is better than nothing.
