In John 4:22, when Jesus says to the Samaritan woman, He is making a statement about the source and fulfillment of God's redemptive plan. The Samaritans had a partial and corrupted form of worship, having accepted only parts of the Hebrew Scriptures and mixing them with foreign practices. In contrast, the Judaeans had received the full revelation of God through the Law, the Prophets, and the covenants, and from them would come the Messiah, the promised Savior. By saying “salvation is of the Judaeans,” Jesus does not exalt the Judaeans, but rather affirms that God’s plan of salvation unfolds through the Judaean Old Covenant remnant nation, particularly through the tribe of Judah, as foretold in the Scriptures. Ultimately, Jesus is pointing to Himself: He is the salvation that has come out of Judah, born in Bethlehem, descended from David. He is the fulfillment of all the prophecies, the true temple, the living water. Though the Samaritans had worshipped in ignorance, now the time had come when true worshippers would no longer be limited by place or race, but would worship the Father in spirit and in truth, through Christ, the Savior of the world.
