Americans hate Mexicans thinking they are different because they are "nonwhite" and "nonwestern", but in truth it's because they are Hispanic. Even if Mexicans were full-blooded Hispanic, they would still be hated and seen as non-white, the same way that Italians had been and still are in the USA.
Everything that Americans hate about Mexicans are the things they also hated in Spaniards: passion, laziness, catholicism, etc, and they mistakenly have attributed these characteristics to the Mexicans' apparent "indianness".
