I don't get it honestly
Like, I understand that variants are a cool concept that allows for some diversification of strategies while also being relatively low-effort to make on the devs' part (I heard 4 has unique models and buildings for each culture so even one civ is probably a big big undertaking in terms of resources)
But trying to sell a supposedly historical game with no Vikings/Spanish/Italians/Portuguese/Koreans is kinda odd honestly, I can't imagine many new players will pick up the game in the hopes of playing as the fucking Macedonian Dynasty (not even the actually cool one)
I'm sure the game's flourishing, and they obviously know what they're doing, but I was looking for reasons to pick up 4 soonish and this is most definitely not a good encouragement

>retarded charge and meter mechanics all over the place
Unrelated but I don't care about these as much because I understand that trying to make a set of unique UUs for every DLC within the game's relatively limited mechanical landscape isn't easy
Most of the obvious choices like "le infantry.. but good against archers?!" and "le archers.. but good against cav?!" have already been done so I'd assume it's a pretty tough job without resorting to gimmicks or "it's a reskin of a regular unit with a slightly different bonus damage profile"
I still want to see a civ get an obviously overtuned unit that only costs gold, with its main gimmick being that you either win within the first 10 mins or you're fucking done.
Now that I think about it, that's what Condottieri should've been:
>Castle Age unit from barracks
>trains instantly
>stats comparable to a 2H swordsman but faster
>costs 140g each

Honestly I am extremely happy about this
I always found it bullshit how you never ever see anyone committing to infantry because a single fucking dude with a bow can effectively shut down 5 times his resource cost worth of swordsmen
Ranged units already have an inherent advantage in being able to deal a constant stream of damage without necessarily being in danger themselves, they should mostly be used as support units that sit behind a mass of infantry/fortifications and deny an area; a small cav mass being able to actually make contact with a formation of xbows should be devastating
