In homeworld's case it wasn't even a matter of clueless retards. It was a case of problem hair Karens scaring off the good-old-boys talent and then rewriting the story, which historically have been epics on a scale where the parties are civilizations, into a story about a self-insert's growth into womanhood. Also all of the side characters were a multicultural whiteless soup where historically side characters are faceless nameless characters who give voices to departments like fleet intelligence, R&D, etc.
My biggest regret is that I bought the fucking collector's edition. I know that pre-ordering is terrible these days, but I made a exception because homeworld held a very precious place in my heart and I wanted to support the franchise even if the game had technical warts that kept it from matching the grandeur of its predecessors. The I went radio silent to try to avoid spoilers. By the time that I learned what those butchers had done, it was too late for me to get a refund.
If you have some time, dig around on YouTube for a scene from one of the levels in Homeworld: cataclysm. The scene is known as "Shaming the Unbound". It's a pretty powerful scene where the the fleet commander is willing to die at the hands of the faction that he came crawling to begging for help against the the game's antagonist.
