This hasn't been the meta for some time. Literally all throughout Nintendo's history they've done gangbusters doing the exact opposite (Pokemon, NES). In the age of social media you want scarcity and people clawing at each other to get it. Nintendo wanted it both ways, and word of mouth about the overstock is catching up to them.
