I don't know why everyone assumes every gun enthusiast is only concerned with managing other people's perceptions of him. Nobody really cares about you.
Guys in America end up buying lots of guns because shooting becomes a hobby and buying guns is easy. The barrier is so low that the reasons for the new one can be very thin. They're doing the same thing any hobbyist ends up doing, buying tons of different items for minor upgrades or tradeoffs in ability.
