for late game artifacts to work (and I think you get maybe 3 to 5 slots for most high level suits anyways) you NEED to use a health regen artifact plus a body cooler. If you have a good chimera hide it helps but there's no resists on it so you only get weight plus regen. The compass has a lot of good ballistc res but the downsides are so severe you need to offset them or you'll die to some anomaly or radiation just by touching it.
It's a pain in the ass and you have to actually finagle builds together, which is fucking annoying considering that to get a full level compass you need 3 of everything that's needed to MAKE IT which are already rare as fuck. You basically won't get one without hours and hours of grinding.
there's a lot of interesting mechanics in gamma but the anomaly balancing is probably the worst shit they've added outside of fucking mutant meat decay and FRIDGES
