I just used an example because they both have to promote many new characters and they keep visiting new regions. Permanent cast works great, but this is mostly a story about (you) visiting new places and knowing new people, kinda like a story to find yourself (not even implicit in this case). Having a party would make it about your relationship with the party instead, which is fine but a different thing (or you end up half-assing both by bloating the concept).
