This is the main reason I despise gamers. Only about 10% of gamers are the actual tastemakers qualified to assess a game's value. Everyone else are just the reactionary masses who thoughtlessly whine about anything that isn't immediately intuitive to them. They don't think about the game design at all; they complain as if by reflex. They can't even recognize when design decisions were made to accommodate their criticisms because their context doesn't last longer than the last game they played.
The biggest issue with TDA is that the studio/publisher didn't realize that Eternal was ONLY a hit due to perfect market timing. Its appeal is mostly for hardcore enthusiasts but it managed to capture a much broader audience because it was the latest big release right when lockdowns began. So they wound up responding to all the criticisms of an audience that was never going to show up for the next Doom game no matter what.

That's why they invented a more suitable character as a vehicle for the different tone they wanted their story to convey.
