It feels very experimental- not very polished but has a lot of neat ideas.

Attacking all comes from a ATB-like system. You build charges over time and spend on skills (or spells).
You can equip weapons but they're all of the same type, but you can swap characters who have different weapons types and abilities. I just unlocked the Chef girl who can cook.
You get a bunch of Pikmin-like creatures that can cast elemental magic (like at the start of this vid) to train and level up and swap. They also carry quest items like Pikmin.
Missions tend to be varied. Some require some puzzle solving to access an area, or to make a path to carry the quest item. Some are just plain hunts.

The game isn't refined crack cocaine like Monster Hunter is but it's a neat game if you have the time and patience for something that feels strange and unexplored.

now that Wilds is confirmed a flop, what are some good Monster Hunter clones to play instead?

Honestly, it's enough. A lot of the best looking PS2 games were -really- pushing the hardware past it's limits.
Wii handled transparency, FX, and loads of texture maps in a scene way better.
Haunting Grounds is still the best looking PS2 game ever
