Art design and direction is the reason these games still look good.
The reason a lot of 7th gen games look like ass is because they prioritised realistic looking graphics over art direction, so they look outdated today. Meanwhile the exceptions of that era that prioritised art direction like Dishonored and Bioshock look timeless despite being graphically dated.

Legitimately does not matter. They all play the same, the License Board/Job System is not deep or clever enough to change the gameplay or result in varying degrees of player engagement.
Watch the movie on youtube, because that's all XII (and FF in general) is.

Same goes for the Pixel Remaster.
Funny how the best compliment you can give modern era Final Fantasy releases is the addition of the potential to skip the gameplay almost entirely.
That's how dogshit this series is and has always been. So many great concept artists, visual effects artists, musicians and voice actors wasted on arguably the worst game designers in the history of the medium.

idk mang, a lot of my favorite games have also come from Japs. I'm pretty sure it's just the ones at Square, or their approach to RPGs in general.
I genuinely do not understand how you make a game, call it an RPG, and have the player have less than zero emphasis on how the game and/or story play out, with a cast entirely comprised of preset characters in a static world and storyline.
"JRPG" is just a misnomer for Adventure game with shoddy gameplay, regardless if it's Action or Strategy-focused (Turn-Based).
Shit, this series may as well be rebranded as a VN. The writing is pretty much on par with Ace Attorney.

It's not hyperbole.
Square's long history of producing nothing notable gameplay-wise makes them strong contenders in my opinion. Sure, there are technically worse, borderline unplayable games made by people/teams that subsequently disappeared off the face of the earth, but a team like Square, for as long as they've been going, with as much disposable income they have?
Yeah, I'd argue their leads are some of the worst, most incompetent individuals of the 21st century. I'll give 'em a break for early titles, even through the late 90s, but they've produced nothing worthwhile in this century, and we're a quarter of the way through it.
I will admit that the implication that XII or any FF should be watched on YT as a movie is hyperbole, considering it implies that any FF has a coherent and/or compelling storyline that isn't overly long for the sake of mystery box revelations.

Fair enough, I just wish they required a second brain cell to succeed at. Beating any Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy title has never felt like an accomplishment, more like an on-rails emotional experience derived exclusively from the aforementioned (artists, musicians) than anything game-related.
Can't imagine anybody in Japan has ever thought about a "that part" in a game they actually want to replay for the sake of playing it, rather than the emotional high spiked by the music or a sequence of dialogue.
And all I can and have been asking of Square for two decades now is
>Why not both?
For reference, Dragon's Dogma, flawed as it is, has some of my favorite gameplay AND story sequences. Games like Chess (strategy) can give that same high if you're facing a competitor who gives you some actual competition, and FF has none. The player is irrelevant to the gameplay, and it makes me sad.

>>713988680
It's not "shit" but the combat is very menu-based.
You have an "action-meter" that builds up every few seconds. You spend it on skills (time pauses while you menu), and lining up certain skills gives benefits.
(At the point of the game I'm in, idk about later) there's no reason for you physically attack the monster. The Pikmin get elemental spells, chaining spells turns them into absolute nukes, so just dodging around, casting spells, and occasionally using the "Call" command to move them to safety is the best combat method. It gets kinda boring but there's an occasional challenging/cool fight.
The real interest in this game is how each quest is vastly different from the last. The common objective is "get the item", but it's a puzzle to get to it.
Sometimes the Pikmin have to physically carry it back to base.
Other times it's locked in a certain part of the map and you need to get a monster part to get to it.
Like in the earlier clip. I had to find the Railgun monster -which was physically inaccessible across a ravine- so I had to blast it with spells while dodging the railgun shots until it decided to change areas. Once I killed it, it drops an item that can be used to nullify lasers, which were blocking my access to the treasure/goal.

Obviously. It does look mediocre in every way. Personally, I think it would've been better if the game has ingame graphics like shown on the cover and a more unique battle mechanic. Such a game could be among the best releases in a year, as pokemon + arpg is really needed, as its always mediocre at best. Imagine the game would have a kick ass story, decent story telling, an unique magic system, cool monsters to tame and train and interesting side content. Easily a top 10 release of the year.

>Bloody Roar 2
Oh my God you just reminded me of a core memory. My whole family used to gather around the Playstation on Saturdays and play video games or watch movies. Bloody Roar 2 was one of our most played games although we had Bloody Roar 1 as well. I used to play Yugo and Long. My step father would play Fox in BR1 and Jenny in BR2. My little brother used to play Sting. After that we'd watch Rush Hour 2 until it was time for bed. I remember I used to take the in game manual to school and draw the characters in it. Both Bloody Roar and Final Fantasy 7. My mom got me a sketchbook to practice but even before that she used to bring printer paper from her job so I'd always have something to sketch on

It's definitely hyperbole and it's additional hyperbole to say they've added "nothing" to the genre despite the many and intense changes they've made to dozens of JRPGs that have spiced up the formulas, ESPECIALLY considering FFXII has probably one of the most controversial systems in gaming period that I don't believe has ever been tried before or sense.
I'd bet money that your "gameplay innovations" that you're trying to argue for are either centered entirely around "choice" like you want a CYOA, or based on non-gaming related items like minute attention to details that are irrelevant for 99% of the spectrum of games out there in general, let alone appropriate for a JRPG.

It's strange. I was gonna argue that Gen 7 turning video games into multimedia stations is what led to the influx of casuals which then led to the cursed scripture
>we're streamlining X for a broader audience
But then I realized that technically speaking, it was Gen 6 that really kicked off the multimedia video game console. Every PS2 was bundled with a DVD and music CD player which put one in every household. So why was gaming able to retain its identity in the Gen 6 era but got lost in Gen 7? Was it the advent of the internet being in every home, that answer feels too simple to explain how bad things had got.

worse, because town building in 1 was
>here are town parts, put them together and place them how you like
town building in 2 is
>you have to craft a bunch of bricks and trees with limited/farmable resource, then craft town parts with those bricks or stone, then place them
it results in you having to grind more and pushing decision paralysis on the player by giving them too wide a choice with little or no input on what they should be doing, and having to change it all when you place down a character and they say "i want a brick house not a stone or wood house" after you already made them, leading to you just not putting anything down most of the time until you have the entire town ready to go - but the game stops you doing that because you need to place down people into houses to get their quests to progress the story in some cases
it makes town building just less comfy and less fun than it was in 1

it is by the same people who made star ocean, but it is nothing like star ocean. it's just a neat story with good designs, lots of missable stuff though, combat isn't that great depth wise but it's visually and audibly good. vp2 is the better gameplay game

Lul, back in my more autistic years, I wrote a 450,000 word fanfiction about this game, set around 2030 where economics collapse gave rise to a new, high tech industrial tribal era and a return to extreme, high stakes, extreme risk sports to keep the masses entertained.
One bored trillionaire buys a couple of obsolete air craft carriers from a weakened American government and launches an actual "Motorstorm Festival" that tours around the world, free of the laws and restrictions that could so easily be imposed just a decade ago.. It draws millions of people for reasons from partying to concerts to the no holds barred racing in which literally anything goes in your attempt to reach the 100 million dollar prize, with teams professional, criminal and fragmented all competing.
Starts with some young dude trying to avoid suicide who just about manages to exercise his way to a more concrete state of mind and decides to enter the qualifiers being held that year on Bolivia's reopened "Death Road".
Based on a game, filtered through reality. The crashes and tactics were depressing and brutal lol, but the laptop on which I was writing it was lost in a fire...

By all accounts the Starfield assets are supposed to be more detailed and complex even for a filler NPC character, since the assets are shared with character creation and all. But modern lighting is tantamount to everything realistic-looking games need to look even remotely presentable. Get a shot of anyone standing around indoors with no spotlights and dynamics about, and it will always, unavoidably, indubitably look like absolute rancid dogshit.
Old games lacking those dynamics had to make sure their characters generally look good in almost any context around the game, plus Silent Hill 3 has the advantage of cinematic presentation being an intent, versus Starfield being open world shit that just needs a generalized whatever for the lighting to handle.

awful idk why people praise it more, dark cloud 1 had buildings that each served a purpose. they thematically made sense too.
dark cloud 2 just throws generic building assets at you and makes you place them around to fill a quota for a checklist, also they have resource costs this time to build which is annoying. It's not even worth spending any time making a town that looks good because the real version of the town in the past/future version of the area all prebuilt depending on your checklist progress in the present.
Time travel also becomes entirely inaccessible in the endgame chapter so its retarded.
bad game.

Depends. I think that many times they make the mistake that "cleaning" the image somehow equate to improving the quality.
In a similar way happens to remastered OST too, in which they add or remove iconic sounds, instead to just increase the quality of it.
The only time I truly liked more every remastered OST I can think of, was for Final Fantasy XII Zodiac Age.

Has some really nice, large environments.
Happy it's playable on the Switch, but without proper button remapping, it is kind of a mess to play with Joycons. Guess you can buy that N64 controller.

I am convinced that the first three Spyro games lend themselves best to upscaling. Those clean, simple textures look just as good at pretty much any resolution.

The English ps3 version came out 2013, only the jap version was 2011. It's old, but I felt like 2011 was still a bit too early.

Japan's 2D art has always been great. I miss the PS1 --> early PS2 era when nearly all their output was 2D games. When everyone started transitioning to 3D is when Japanese gaming went to shit.

is this the Lara Croft where you go underground in an egyptian like cave and there's dinosaurs down there?
I remember when I was playing it, i got scared shitless of a Gorilla or something, because it would do ridiculous damage. and I would run from it, then check its position, and the fucker kept moving forward. like those videos of cats stalking and whenever you look away they get closer?
shit scared me to my core
