I definitely think it's less about the SOUL being Literally (You) and more of a device to interact with the world of DELTARUNE. Like how Darkseid always messes with the Justice League through an avatar of destruction and not his true physical self, because the real Darkseid would collapse their reality under his cosmic weight. The heart shaped object is like another vessel in that sense with limits on what it can and can't do.
